Can some lite please tell me how long you can escort (at say 25K) with both the P51 and P47?

Can you make it all the way to Berlin (assuming fighting in and out)?

seems if I remember from past ETO events we had to piggy back the escorts. i.e. one group for the first 1/3 of the flight, 1/3 meet up at Berlin and the last group (or the 1st group after they refueled) to bring us home.

Muskie,

Have to review my figures to make sure I am giving you accurate data, but I have...

at .8 fuel divisor (slightly better than the .75 in the rules)with throttle at 100%

P-51B (full tanks + D/Ts) 138 Min
Internal Only = 89 Min
P-47D-22 (full tanks + D/Ts) 110 Min
Internal Only = 67 Min

So, it's a big case of "Hold those tanks as long as possible boys!"

Not sure but there may be some fuel burn testing going on with the a/c involved. I am sure the guys doing it will post the figures.

Here is an idea for you.

T+0
Send all Jugs on highly aggressive seek and destroy sweep straight to Germany.

T +20
P51s roll and RV with BG doing usual close escort.

T+60 approx.
Jugs RTB from advance sweep, rearm and then act as the reception escort.

S3 Arena is currently locked, so I'd have to resort to good 'ol math to get the "real" numbers. Data at 0.70 FUELDIV, using the BIG DTs on both aircraft: P-51B= 113 minutes. P-47D-22=78 minutes. Generally that means that any P-47D-22 used as "close escort" will waggle "good bye" to the buffs before they get to Berlin by either of the "traditional" routes to the target. Count of a few extra minutes for the "extra" 0.05 factor. Keep in mind that those are the numbers for fighters that DO NOT have to drop their tanks to engage. Once the buffs develop their route, better guesstimation of coverage can occur.

Happy trails...

Great replies guys!

One question, because we did this before, If a P51 with drop tanks goes straight from F107 to F93 (25K), dropped tanks, how long would they have to stick around and still make it home?

352nd (Meaning Mr Wolf) is trying to work out all possibilities for range and techniques for maximum extension.

It is obvious that generally P-51s would be the easier close escort and 47s an ingress/egress escort.

BUT, the P-47D-22(25) is capable of a much higher max alt (38K+, though it takes a VERY long time to climb) and can take on the high alt 109s that will most surely be present.

We are trying to see if a scenario of P-47 escort of very high fighters can "go all the way".

Just info, with conclusions to come hopefully.
