If you want to lobby for a no GPS event, make it on one of the newer terrains - one that has features to nav by.

....And a terrain that doesn't happen to come out as a forced DL "20 minutes" before the Event start time. Navigation by pilotage requires either a chart that shows the terrain features or EXPERIENCE flying over the area. "How do you get to the US from England?" "Turn left at Greenland" ain't hardly a precision navigation technique.

Warbirds has . Vor which gives bearing and distance to the station. Pilotage, dead reckoning and electronic navigation just like you did for your private license.

We could always do a blended event. 10 minutes of GPS, then 10 no GPS, etc. The first 10 on gives groups a chance to form up, then with it off, gives the buffs a chance to try and avoid a Head On attack from a 190A8, which would be very bad for the buff. ;)

I remember this was done in the past and it seemed to work out ok.

No GPS at all or relying on .VOR alone would be a step too far IMO.

I think it would work using the existing HEADING and GRID REF from your HUD but simply not seeing your arrow flashing on the map when you pull it up

Just means you plot your own position and heading by referencing your HUD info onto the map. Its not automatically going to show you.
That - combined with .vor would work ok.

I have turned off GPS in the WW2 arena so you can see whats its like.

the grid ref in the HUD

first number is vertical line divided into 100
second first number is horizontal line into 100

4.80, 7.67

means find the 4 vertical line and go EAST .80 towards the 5 line.
means find the 7 horizontal line and go NORTH .67 towards the 8 line.
where they intersect is your position.

Seems to be a moot point.
Those who want their "dead reckoning" simply turn off your HUD and refrain from using your map.
Problem solved and everybody gets what they want.

S3 is a game for points and no one is going to give themselves a handicap.

No GPS is an added challenge for the event overall.

Some want more interesting S3 and exciting S3, some don't.

If we get HUD coordinates turned off I will run a true no GPS event for those that are interested in something a little more challenging.

Just a thought about the colored radar. It makes it so easy to see who has the numbers advantage in a fight, I think its possible that it may actually be leading to less air to air combat.

Definitely and an excellent observation.
