How might this be implemented and ruled? What would the odds be to warrant penalty? 1:2; 1:3? 2:5?

A 13 ship loose formation of Zeros happened upon a slightly lower 7 plane formation who promptly turned tail and used their speed to avoid engagement.

that was "Tactical " AE's was escorts for N.S. strike package.. Which successfully, attacked TGT un opposed and un touched whole Flight. 2nd objective in Tactical move was to seperate and isolate .. which 3 of youre zero's gents just couldnt resists.. was slain for it
while AE's landed a entirely entact flight..

i think you got us for sure

"I know I did learn one thing last night, It was very much a learning experience being on the AE TS. Thanks guys for letting the NS in. I have never heard a fighter group in action and it was really neat. It didn't sound to me like they were very bored. On our 1st run up to 60 we (NS and AE) ran into a high group of A3M. The AE, without hesitation, went right through them and attacked, even though they were outnumbered, and then drug them south east away from us so we could finish our strike. I, of course, was shot down on the 1st pass by a fricking 40mm gun (thanks for turning up the Ack Jabo), but the AE continued to protect the remnants of the NS until we all RTB'd. Sure seemed that they were not bored and I think they had some fun and had several kills. "

the Honor was all ours.. we was so impressed with you guy.. so cool so claim i bet it was fun listening to us scream lke lil school girls :)

AE's will fly with you Gents... any time... any where ..any mission

Really enjoyed reading all these viewpoints. Here's what I think about the S3.

I'm Canadian. That means I pay about $24 Cdn/mth for the premium account that gives me access to the S3 thanks to exchange and the banks taking a big slice of cross border transactions. That may be peanuts to some of you but it's a big expense to this retiree. So, why do it? There are a ton of WWII games out there costing much less....even FREE...with player numbers in the high thousands and superior graphics. Why stay with Warbirds?

The answer is simply: the Squad Select Series. It is the only reason I'm in Warbirds. The S3 is the only series where the reality quotient is right up there. The Janitors do an incredible job of making it as realistic a sim as possible and they never stop. For 3 hours each week I get to be a fighter pilot whose real objective is to survive the war! You know, just like real people......not the lemmings who play FPS games with unlimited lives. If we actually achieve the mission objectives then that's a bonus. War's fought by throwing away troops lives are wars that are lost! Just look at WWI. Even the winners lost!

Just keep doing what you do Janitors. The S3 is the most realistic sim I've played warts and all.
Keep it up.

Well I must say at first I was not thrilled about the match up, but hell none of us ever are. So we practiced and learned from each frame how to improve. It truly was a game of chess! We pushed a few fights we avoided a few. We learned that by flying smart we could survive and accomplish the missions. Sometimes the whole jump into the fight knowing your gonna die in the first 30 min isn't the right thing to do. We were able to use our speed and set up during our engagements and we had fun. 23rd would be willing to do a reverse match up. <S> All was fun!

Many of the allied fighter pilots seemed to have a thrilling series, I for one really enjoyed it, while I understand most of the IJN fighters found it boring.

Soaring around at 25+k, with excellent all around view and untouchable unless willingly choosing to engage, it's no surprise the IJN fighter pilots did not have as high a heart-rate as us allied pilots, flying low in our iron-dogs, with awful rear view and possibly getting jumped at any time, knowing that only a dive-out and disciplined wingman support would keep you alive.

I dare to say the fighters were not equal. However the plane match-up was historical, this is what the allied pilots had to deal with in the real war with life at stake. I for one love a good challenge and we were several allied pilots who showed that you can actually end the series with a positive kill/loss ratio as long as you use your tools right. This however does not mean jumping into a fürball no matter the alt/numbers/odds and naively thinking your stick-jerking will score you mass-kills and cancel the fact the enemy airframes outperforms yours by twice the climb- and turnrate. It's the pilot not the plane, but only up to a point when the enemy pilots are very skilled as well. The smart thing to do was to run from zeros at superior alt/numbers and then try to get an engagement on equal terms which, as =vslp= pointed out, was very hard to accomplish as the IJN pilots did not willingly cruise around at 5k altitude.

To quote Sun Tzu: "The competent general first wins and then goes to war, while the foolish general goes to war first and then seeks a way to win."

After being crushed in two frames the Allied realized that our points lay in ground strikes, as that's what our assets excelled at, but we still tried to find fights at equal terms. Either by boom n zoom or as in frame 5 where the 4th were on the hunt for any isolated cons below 15k, and even scored a few kills when we found some. Also if you check my orders as CO for frame 4, you'll see that the first sortie was a trap, meant to indeed engage the IJN fighters, sending in squads to strike ports/ships hoping a few bold steps of zeros would come chasing, just to run into the 4th FG who were circling at 25+k out at sea ready to converge with the 475th or 23rd on any would be pursuers. Unfortunately no zeros came racing and we then focused on ground strikes as planned.

I for one had a thrill this series and do not mind plane mis-matches as long as they are historical and the "weaker" side has other means to win. I also think the Ai's are a good addition to the S3's the way they behaved in frame 4 & 5. Will take some tweaking to get it right but I think the concept has potency.

Cheers all!

Under the above quote proposal, that tactic would be penalized. Im not for that at all.

Have no issue with AI...have issue with dar telling you what is AI and what is human thus enabling you to "safely" engage AI at will and avoid player to player contact.

Robert, I like what you had to say. You learn from each frame how to improve the next. I am not sure why Dawger wants to penalize those that don't engage. That would only push folks away from the game. It's up to individual groups to determine when to engage and not to engage. It's call using smart tactics in my book.

^^ What Hawk said...

If we are to fly an event and try to win that is one thing, If we are just re-enacting things that happened in the past then that is different all together.

Discussions as this are very good, in my opinion.

I do enjoy the S3... just wish it started a couple of hours earlier! But I suppose its realistic for the pilot to be somewhat burnt out and tired... lol

Not so keen on back to back.. IMO just move on to a new scenario, its more exciting than repeating!
Saw far more action in frame 5 with an Iron Dog than I did in frame 4 with a P40
That's just how it is..

Not such a fan of "back to back" events .. IMO do the event once and move on to a new scenario.
