This is the map of the battle area.

Green forces will be based at 167 and attack in and surrounding Kobe Bay (F132 Area)
Red Forces will oppose from Kobe area bases
Map overlay lines are exactly 60 miles long

The white numbers on each line are the bearing TO/FROM the center point and are centered at the 30 mile point on each line.

Fuel divider will be 1 for fuel planning. B25's will be primary strike aircraft.
Fighters to be announced but late war models can be expected.

Questions and comments welcome (Including how to use this map overlay to plan and navigate.)

This will be a NON HISTORICAL EVENTS and planesets WILL be mixed. So decide if you want offense or defense. Defense will have simpler navigation as all you need is a .vor to homeplate to figure out how to get home.

Each side may need a ground based radar operator for vectoring and lost souls.

When is this event happening? If it is this coming Sunday I won't be able to make it, otherwise, I would like to fly IJN ;)

No date set yet but as soon as I can finish it up basically.

It will NOT Axis/Allied Split. I am sure there will be IJN available.

I will probably alternate Historical with Fantasy.

I do have a Rabaul event planned (This was going to be it actually) when the New Guinea terrain shows up

As long as you have 2 fields that you can do a VOR on, you can always fix your position. You can do it with 1, but then you need to know how to reverse the degrees. It tells you the course to your home field, for example, ".VOR 167" and it returns, 100 miles, course 270, then you simply plot your space as 100 miles, 090 from your field. The simplest was to figure the reciprocal, is to subtract the VOR heading to your base from 360. That will give you your approximate position (remember you are moving at least 2 miles per minute, probably more like 5 miles per minute, so if you take a minute to figure out the reciprocal, you have moved from the spot) :D

+2-2 for figuring reciprocal real fast... If I'm on a 020 heading to the field, Add 2 to the first and subtract 2 from the second number...200 recip. Now you do have to do some quick analysis on the +2-2 to determine if you add or subtract from the first number...

Reverse the above and you on a 200 heading to the field. To find the radial you are on a quick analysis shows that adding 2 to the first will give you a 4 (oops...too much for a 360 degree compass!), so subtract 2 from first number and add 2 to the second...and voila 020 radial.

Some just find it easier to 180 addition or subtraction:) Add if less than 180 subtract if more than . Some useful hints at using .VOR without a helmet fire.

A quick recap on Dead Reckoning: For every 60 mph you are flying at 1 mile a minute. So flying at 300mph means you are at 5 miles a minute, and if I fly for 7 minutes, I should be 35 miles from where I started my timing (did I mention you need a watch you can start?) .

You need a map, a stopwatch, and an idea of where you are heading to keep track of where you are:) What makes it fun is when you get engaged and end up dragging or pursuing...and realize you have no clue which way you went in the process:)

I recently learned how to have the GENERAL cause the execution of dot commands on the Front End of EVERYONE in an arena.

This is global so its usefulness is limited to stuff you want to happen to everyone simultaneously.

Using this technique the GENERAL can cause a series of map draw commands to happen to everyone.

So the map in this thread can be recreated live in the arena so everyone will have the compass rose depictions (whether they want them or not)

As for the nuts and bolts of creating a compass rose.....

Warbirds in game maps use an X, Y world coordinate system so I determine the X, Y coordinate of the field then use some trigonometry (Cosine and Sine functions) to determine the X, Y offset of the various compass rose lines. Then some addition and subtraction. All of this is in a spreadsheet so I then have to type all of those numbers into a dotfile for the General to execute.
