As we were tasked to jabo a few ground TGTs, I split the group ..15 Spit IXs and 8 P-38Fs. Bombr had the 38s. We launched from F77 with the spits climbing west and turning towards 69 for altitude before vectoring inbd F34 to cover the 38s, who were heavy. As we approached F34, heard the cal of LW nearby. We had a flight of Spits(light's fight) above and ahead, while the 38s were low. We engaged over F34 and tried to keep the fight high and north of 34. 38s closed it and egressed west. The Spits got separated and pappyb /=weis= chased a 190 to the deck, while the rest stayed high and near 34. We killed some and lost some. Remaining spits climed to RV at F 70 and as the LW semed to have bugged, I had the group RTB 77. Our P-38s got assigned another TGT, so they launched south, while the remainig Spits went north to cover the coast from F 69 to F 30 ae altitude(as high as possible). Saw a few 190s low heading to F69 and engaged. Ccajun got one and the other bugged out so we climbed back up and rtb 77 for ammo and fuel. The few remaining Spits launched to south to cover our P-38s who were busy closing posts, but never got the chance to help them as we were bounced by superior numbers east of 79 and made a run for it' Grand totals= 41 ground tgts destroyed by the P-38s and 5 kills plus 2 assists for a cost of 19 airplanes lost. Not the best showing. Thanks besea for a gut crunching night......good plan which for the most part went well <S>.
