I'm being dense. What are the red numbered blobs on the map? I see nothing in the legend or nothing in the rules. Are these the only valid targets?

Salute!

On the PDF map found at the main S3 site, the valid targets are marked with gold stars. Nothing else counts!!!!!!

Flak Concentrations

They can be toggled off as a layer in the .pdf file.

Is there any reason that we need to take-out LARGE fields? Are MEDIUM fields easier to take down? Enough such that you guys could take out 4 in one trip instead of 3 large ones?

Those large fields are our only targets available to the bomber squad. If we get enough bombers/bombs, we can take out 2-5 of them without any trouble. Our issue is being able to limit our losses to enemy fighters and disconnections. I would highly suggest that we use the blue line in and green line out. This gives us flexibility. If things don't go as we planned, then we are able to egress on the blue line back to where all our fighters are located. If things go well, we simply continue to additional targets as we egress out on the green line.

Until the bombers are ready to ingress, the fighters will have plenty of time to defeat the enemy attacks, as they did in frame 3, before the bombers arrive at RP. As long as we are sure that 2 steps of fighters can meet us at RP, we'll be good to go. By killing most of the enemy fighters who are frantically trying to grab as many points as they did in the last frame, there won't be that many to attack the bombers. That's why we aren't expecting to need more than 2-steps. I look forward to hearing from the 352nd on this idea.

The 4th and 23rd have proven extremely proficient at destroying the enemy as they attacked us in frame 3. They just need to be placed as close to the frontline targets as possible. They need to literally stop the enemy in their tracks and wipe them out.

We can't lose this frame. The Allies will be victorious! :)

What in the rules makes large fields the only fields available targets to the bomber squads? What am I missing?

So you guys are getting this information from the pdf file. I only see the map when I click on the link in a web page. When I save it to my desktop and open, it looks the same w/o any layers. Where do I get this multi-layered pdf?

I believe per the rules, only fields marked with the green stars on jabo's map are valid bomber targets. Hence, L74 and L89 in the North near Kiel, etc.

Since Tac 34, 35, 36 and 43 have been ruled closed, capping the front line will be probmatic early (no nearby fields).

Click the .pdf symbol. That will give you access to the various layers. Pick some or none and then save the map you prefer.

12. Ground Targets - indicated airfield targets score points if they are ruled closed. Due to the number of attached industry targets to airfields in the ETO they will not appear closed during the frame or in the buffer. German bridge spans and port cranes will rebuild during frames and will continue to score points for the series

S3#84 – Operation Clarion; Northern Germany - February 1945

An operational series with the more numerous Allies pounding away at the enemy main airfields while the Luftwaffe defends hard and uses its Me262s to strike back at Allied airfields, bridges and ports in France.

NOTES
1. Late war rides with each pilot to fly at least two a/c types in the series. Squads may determine how best to do this as a unit.
2. Me262s used only as a strike a/c and cannot expend any ord or 30mm on anything but surface targets and AI a/c.
3. Limited bases for Me262s and Allied Heavy Bombers.
4. Points scored for closing airfields, destroying both player and AI a/c, sinking ships and destroying bridge spans and port cranes.
5. Due to all the attached targets in the ETO airfields must be ruled closed.
6. Squad Numbers have been revised based upon the previous events average. They should be a bit more accurate now.

A/C are listed in the table.
Pilots just have to fly two a/c types in the series. What ever ratio of frames they want. They can fly more of the listed types but basically you are going to have to fly 1 frame in a ride other the squad mainstay(for most the P51D or B24J).

LAFs are easy to close with not too many structures thus the low point total. Remember AAA and tower are not counted for destruction.
Ships are moving and may be Freighters or DD2s, the only two AI ship types that work.
Aircraft will be random Ju52s near the indicated travel lines or various types parked at some all or none of the LAFs. So fighters may have another mission rather than just escort or CAP.

Obviously, Frame 5 is each Squad's last chance to fly that "second" airframe. For Squads who have elected to fly the same airframe for the first (4) Frames, switching ac types in not optional.

Shut down linux OS and restarted in Windows... PDF looks a whole lot different! Thanks!!!

<JABO - PS - you might want to indicate somewhere more in-the-face that all this information is stored in layers on the pdf... it wasn't obvious to a veteran CO who already did 10 frames - okay - last one was back in 2005 or 6... >

MTDEW - to hit shipping up North, would you want Mossies and F107? What would the projected ETA be? Is there a closer alternative field that would work? I'd like to figure-out if we can make a forward sweep of fighters push enemy away from that area and then have bombers show up farther south on radar, drawing them away from you.
