Just talked to my Uncle who was an engine mechanic on the modified B29 they used to drop the X1. He was usually on hand when flying was scheduled. He said Chuck would come blasting onto the tarmac in his Model T, jump into his flight suit and crawl in the already warmed up B29....no kidding...the radiator was typically steaming because he ran it so hard. Yeager said he would do between 55-60 mph all the way. That is cooking in a Model T. He says Chuck was a very likable type of guy. Oh, they are currently trying to locate his Model T for a museum. What a find that would be, heh?
As a side note he said that he isn't sure how many times the B-29 ever came back on all four engines, but he believes on average the B29 would come back with 2 engines feathered. He remembers at least one time it came back on one engine.
