Sir, if one flies a strike aircraft (to enable as many as possible) and lives then can one switch to another listed type to fly fighter? or must one die to change?
I would suggest that switching (though historically abhorrent) would be the better tac, as it would more freely allow larger numbers of strike, without penalization for living.

You can switch aircraft types just when you die you or loose a life in one you cannot use it again. So some guys can fly strike then then switch to fighter to cover based upon squad side needs.
As noted if the situation warrants a pilot flying say a Typhoon for strike can drop ord and conduct air defenseoffensive operations. Also if after a first successful sortie the situation needs more fighter aircraft those pilots still alive in Typhoons can switch to a Spit then back later to a Typhoon. But once you die(bail, ditch or KIA) in an aircraft type you cannot fly that type again in the frame.
