In Frame 3 the IJN launched their attack against Midway. High Kates escorted by many zeros conducted a precision bombing run using 800kg bombs on the hangars and airfield structures of Midway. Nine hangars and 21 other structures were destroyed while defending Buffalos tried to climb to the height of the attackers. At least 12 Japanese aircraft were downed by the tubby fighters in the initial attack. Meanwhile scouts from Midway had located the Japanese fleet but defending CAP accounted for 3 SBDs. This allowed the USN nearby to launch a full strike on the enemy Task Force. Outnumbered the Japanese choose to stand down their attack on Midway and defend their naval assets. A large force of Wildcats and Buffalos moved to sweep ahead of the SBD strike force. Fierce combat of the IJN fleet ensued with the superior Zero being roughly handled by the more rugged US fighters. 10 zeros were downed for the loss of one F2A. TBFs and SBDs hit the IJN fleet with the TBFs proving especially deadly under the command of Captain Coolon, sinking two flattops.
Overall the losses to the Japanese were 27 A6M2s and 12 Kates to the USNs losses of 3 SBDs and 2 F2As. Agility and range lost out to strength and destructive power.
The US wins the frame 73 to 32 mainly because of the heavy loss of Japanese aircraft and pilots.
Frame 4 is back to the Solomons. New start boxes and each side is cleared to roll all aircraft at T+45. Until then only scouts and CAP can be up.
