Sorry cant say much about the AI. The IL2s I am running have their engagement range, skill level and weapons level all maxed out and still they sometimes attack and sometimes dont. Running into the ground is a major problem, sometimes they taxi along for 10 mins then hit a cliff and fly off to RTB. Its a good test to understand their weaknesses. Thats why I am not too hard on the poor formation flying of some of the AIs. I did see I think gundocs attack with JU88s on shipping, his AI dropped a torp with him twice but he lined up wrong and it was on the outside so both missed. If it was on the inside to the flank the AIs torp may have hit.
One thing I found experimenting on the AIs is to test the various loadouts offline on the AI. They dont seem to attack with some loadouts for example rockets or guns. Not sure if you can set the engagement range but if you can 8,000 to 10,000 is a good range so it picks up the targets. Farther than that and it may attack balloons or go off on the wrong target location. Too short and it wont attack anything.
I dont think AI aircraft that crash register in the log. Somebody has to shoot them down. Dont even think you can get a maneuver kill on them if you are in the area.
AI aircraft arent really ready for a major role in the S3s but we need to test them regardless.
Tips from guys that use them in the MA would be really helpful.

You can set the AI drones to ignore AAA/Arty and concentrate on vehicles and structures. Not sure if this is possible for the player drones.
