It would be interesting to know what Darryl's Raiders think that they can actually accomplish with BIPLANES carrying 500 lb. bombs. F-154 has fewer total targets, but has TANKS to kill.

Darryl I think you're bitting off to much of the apple, flying swordfish. Do you realize how easily you are spotted over water, what the radar coverage is to the west, and the time needed to fly that route? Please rethink your plan, or better justification for an attack that deep into LW country. I don't like the idea of trying to protect the DR that long on enemy dar, and then we have to go south after the attack. Darry give me some other options?

=wilz=

I don't know what you are referring to, WILZ. All I said was that we'd be sticking together and wanted to hit something small because we have to use the Swordfish in the last frame. I didn't stipulate any specific target. Please give me something that we can either take down in one sortie, or put me close enough to it that we can do it in multiple sorties. These Swordfish are not carrying huge loadout and I may not have many of them.

What about bridges?

DEWOLF:
I'm not the one that picked the targets. Read my post above that I put in the planning thread, sir. I think the best we can do is hit some bridges and hopefully pick up a few points for them. Should be fun to fly them, though.

Anyone:
What is the comparable a/c to the Swordfish on the Axis side?

THREE, count 'em, THREE, passes with a Hurri IIB and both bridges are down. Personally speaking, it is a big waste of 500 lb. ord to target bridges when there are tanks and villes to take out. IMHO hitting only the bridges does not make the trip with the bipes worthwile.

Frame V Orders:
Doolittle Raiders: Based out of Field 160 in Swordfish.
Sortie #1
Task: Strike targets at F154 and or F129 with primary targets being the bridges.
Flight Plan: Launch and head for F163. Once DAR reveals LW, or engagement with 23rdFG
and 352nd FG go NOE to target area. Use the natural terrain valleys for cover to targets.
If DAR shows many enemy aircraft to the east hold off enemy DAR, to the south, until clear.

Sortie #2
Task: Repeat Sortie #1 to close fields, or strike targets in the middle of the map, close to the front line. Fields 126 & 123.
Flight Plan: Once again NOE to targets depending on LW coverage.

DEWOLF:
The orders above call for our primary targets to be bridges, then we hit the other targets specified. Why are you spending so much time worrying about my orders? We'll take care of business, sir. Haha. Is there something else bothering you? :)

Just wondering, can 1 Swordfish with 3 500 lbrs take out the bridge while the other bombs can be used on targets. Tanks are worth 1 point each and a 500 lbr can take out a tank. :)

The testing that we have done gets most of us shot down by the guns that are nearby the bridges. Yes, the bombs can take out spans of the bridges. Without taking out the guns before we get there, lots will die.

Darryl, was that NOE or from 10K? If I gave you to tough a target and I know that, either plan on hitting the bridges and then come back later for the ack and bldgs. If the fighters are able to take down most of the LW fighters in the first hour, we can then spread out and take down lots of stuff later. I be in the tower on GCI first sortie and if it looks bad for you guys, I'm going to have run south as fast as you can and divert 23rd and 352nd to assist. Again, I want a knock down fight with the LW in the first hour. If it doesn't work, we're up the creek without a paddle.
Good luck

What I took from your orders was to knock out the bridges and take out the gvs at F154. The targets at F129 will be a little tougher. Is there any way you can send a couple of fighters to knock out the two guns at F154 at the same time we arrive there? These bi-planes come apart easily when hit by those guns. Hate to lose everyone from those two guns.

There are four guns at F129 that would need to go down.

If you can help with this, we can be a lot more successful, sir.
