Been doing some practicing etc with the drones in the Training and dueling arena. Had an airstart of 15 k at field 33.
Tested some theoretical search patterns dragging my drones out in a fan shaped search pattern. As long as I kept stretching their flight line out and giving them a waypoint ( that little box at the end of their line) they followed course very well, losing some altitude but not a whole lot, like mebbe 4 k or so. I would periodically transfer over to them to have a look see around, and only had to go back to the drone I had transferred over from and give that drone a flight line and waypoint as the one you transfer over from doesn't have a waypoint and would otherwise begin to fly over to my position. This testing allows you to widen an individual 's search pattern.
I also tested level bombing at high altitude putting drones into a line astern pattern with various spread lengths, adopting CV's course and flying up his line and releasing at various lengths ahead of him. With a varied spread length this helps to get at least one hit on cv from any one or two of your drone..calculating the distance ahead of cv course to drop of course is what takes some practice....the air to ground strike feature doesn't appear to work at this time.
If you do not care to level bomb from altitude and choose to dive bomb, THEN drag your drones off a little distance away ( preferably to different positions) around the cv's, perhaps ahead of them and make your individual attacks. The drones when they reach the waypoint you have set for them then will circle that waypoint awaiting further orders form you and that's when they lose altitude so keep dragging that way point around in order to preserve their alt as much as possible.
I would encourage practicing in the training and dueling arena

When I switched to a wingman I found the power set to zero. That surely make them drop altitude all the way into the water.

I've noticed the same things.. flying a TBF-1
when switching the power always goes to 0 (in every plane) but the flight characteristics of the TBF make problems as the nose pitches up immediately and it stalls even if you power up right away. I lost several wingmen to this as I didn't have enough altitude to recover the stall.

Also it seems that when you tell a wingman where to go he changes altitude also.. if you are lucky he is at 8k other times it was down on the wave tops.

In regards to ai sitting on the water. I had moved to one of my ai's and it was sitting on the water. I moved back to the previous airframe and told the one on the water to rtb. Then I moved back to it and it was flying once again. Of course I lost my stick inputs otw back to the cv and had to pull the plug anyhow.
