http://www.squadselectseries.com - final summary up

The final frame of the series still saw 80 players show up even though we are right into summer. The Allies had a surprise for the Germans and decided to concentrate using fighter-bombers in the final frame with their elite intruders sent in below RDF to hit railway tunnels away from the main action in NW France.

The initial Allied attack by heavy P47s on the Dieppe area saw 6 anchored ships sunk and two docks destroyed. P47s covered by mainly Spit XIVs fought several actions from Dieppe on north during the night. A mixed bag of 109s and FW190A4s were put up against the RAF Spitfires. Spit XIVs came out the winner claiming 20 while losing 5 to the Germans. Overall the Allies claimed 24 kills during the night to 14 claims by the Luftwaffe and 3 to Army flak units.

The specialized B24 unit the hit 5 of 6 tunnel entrances to the important German railway system came in below radar and began plinking these tough targets while the fight raged to the north. But they proved to be difficult to kill and required repeat attacks that alerted nearby Luftwaffe units which pounced on the B24Js and shot down all 4 of them while losing two to their gunners.

A limited number of V1s were fired against England in the final frame, due to launch closures and depot destruction effecting supply of the rockets. Of the 48 doodle-bugs launched 25 were shot down over England or the Channel. Tired Hurricane IIs were tried to intercept but proved too slow and a couple strayed too far off Dover and fell victim to waiting 109s.

The Allies won the final frame 87 to 80 and took the series 514 to 477.

An interesting series with the nice addition of V1s just in time for the event. Thanks to all who made the models, skins and FMs to get this to work. Bomber and strike pilots continue to be in short supply and this really effects the design and conduct of an event. This will probably be the last series with dedicated roles for squads. To continue we will need to share the roles around from series to series. We are ever the optimists and hope things turn around and new players return to the game. But we like playing with ourselves and will continue to do so as long as they will have us. :)

Thanks to all those players that have hung in all these years. It would not be the same without you.

Bring on the beer and enjoy your summer sitting by the pool in speedos!

Salute! Horrido! Banzai!

TNX, Jabo, for a good report.

Due to annual trek to high country, this old fart was unable to participate in a most interesting series. Should be back late September, as the satellite I just installed has a sorry ping time for WB.

I call attention to some words from the guy with that donkey.

Best I can see is to assign squads to the sides based on traditional roles and squad pref that are made known to the Janitors. Then let the sides decides who does what. While we are at it, then provide the plane set and let the players pick their rides. To make things interesting, maybe add variants and new rides each frame.

But get rid of the mandatory ride rules. Sheesh.

And now we try to existy:

Keep the faith, man. Most of our problems are not with the design and scenarios of the S3 events. They are due to other WB machinations.

No need to thank us if the "company" can keep the planes and flight models and damage models working to replicate the WW2 experience.

I only know two folks that have been here since "Three Days in August". That would be the toothless one and the cannuck with that big paddle tail. It was a defining episode in Warbirds. Arch enemies met each other and had to cooperate and develope new tactics and actually "plan" for a frame! Imagine that. Being the only dedicated buff outfit for the LW, we had to work with Vadr, Bino, Buille and others that had shot us up for a year or two in the Main.

This old fart shall try to provide a buff presence with a coupla other folks as the "Nomad" entry. Looks like we shall be mercenaries and fly with any outfit that will take us, but would like to remain assigned to the sides as "Nomads".

Gums sends....

We so few bomber and strike pilots it will have to simple in design but in some ways more challenging to accomplish. If a squad has to conduct both fighter and strike operations they will probably have to switch up their plane types to conduct them successfully. Generally mandatory aircraft types are there to simulate the historical event. That is to say left up to themselves BoB would have been fought by all spitfires vs all 109s. Historically that was not an option. Events where there was only a few main aircraft types are much easier to simulate, if we have those types. Now because of the FM and model team we have a much wider range of aircraft so some events that we could not even attempt can be now explored. Perfect example is the early war Eastern Front. Not only new Russian but new Finnish aircraft as well.

There are a host of event designed rules that can channel play in historical ways, the challenge is finding the easiest and less restrictive ones to accomplish it. Season 18 will be a smaller group, in a smaller space with a few main aircraft options to conduct missions. We will still have uneven contests with one side attacking and one side defending but now that all squads that remain have no trouble switching sides to make a better event it will be easier to organize similar sides fighting each other.

At the start of September we will again ask for squad numbers and assign sides for the years events. Before then we will post a tentative schedule of events for feedback. All events will be designed around the latest build from the FM team so that we have similar designed FMs for most of the aircraft involved.
