For those of us who don't have the wonderful jet education that Mr. Dobs happens to have.....the ".dot slip 1" selection represents a "yaw string". Most common in glider aircraft.

I altered my original graphic of the panel to include the instruments highlighted by the white box.
Those evaluating the possible use of the "dot slip 1" command may wish to note that the deflection of the HUD "yaw string" exactly duplicates the deflection of the "ball". It allows the pilot to know the "ball" information without having to look down at the panel. Just as an aside, there are any number of folks who would like to argue that the instruments in the white box are the ONLY ones "required" for flight.
