In the somewhat recent past I remember that the P-39 became the plane of choice because the cannon was very powerful (ground attack)... I think that things may have been modified from that. I flew offline in the new guinea terrain, attacked a static ship in the harbor. It took ALL of my 37mm rounds (that's all I shot) before the ship was destroyed. Has the 37mm been neutered? is it correct? Or is this another series of trying to attack armed with a fly swatter? |

I'll bring this up to the powers that be.... Good question. Remember it is ball ammo...not exploding mine ammo:) Dobs |

I did quite a bit of testing when I was evaluating the terrain. What I found was a 37mm hit was a one shot kill IF you hit the box (the center of the ship low towards the water) When I attacked stern to bow I couldn't kill them with the 37mm only from the sides. That being said, I had the same results with the 50 Cal. From the sides they would generally go down in one pass, lengthwise took a lot longer. |

Seems that normal was HE rounds....From Wikipedia..... so consider the source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4_cannon M4 cannon 37 mm Automatic Gun, M4 Type Autocannon Production history Designer John Browning - Designed 1921-1938 Manufacturer Colt Produced 1939 Specifications Weight 213 lb (97 kg) Length 89.5 in (2.27 m) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shell 37x145mmR M4 Caliber 37 mm (1.46 in) Action recoil operation Recoil 9⅝ in (245 mm) Rate of fire 150 rpm Muzzle velocity 2,000 ft/s (610 m/s) Feed system 30 round magazine The 37 mm Automatic Gun, M4, known as the T9 during development, was a 37 mm (1.46 in) recoil operated autocannon designed by Browning Arms Company.[1] The weapon, which was built by Colt, entered service in 1942. It was used in the Bell P-39 Airacobra and P-63 Kingcobra. Designed primarily as an anti-aircraft weapon, the gun had a muzzle velocity of 2,000 ft/s (610 m/s) and a cyclic rate of 150 rounds per minute. It was normally loaded with high-explosive shells, but could also be loaded with the M80 armor-piercing shell which could penetrate 1 in (25 mm) of armor plate at 500 yd (460 m). It was magazine-fed and could be fired manually or by remote control through a solenoid mounted on the rear of the gun. Recoil and counter-recoil were controlled hydraulically by means of a piston and spring combination connected to the recoiling mechanism and operating in an oil-filled recuperator cylinder mounted to the stationary trunnion block assembly. The recoiling mechanism of the gun included the tube and tube extension, recuperator piston and piston rod, lock frame assembly, driving spring assemblies, and the breechblock assembly. The nonrecoiling parts included the trunnion block group, the feed box and feeding mechanism, the recuperator cylinder and bushing, the back plate group, and the manual charger assembly |

So it is a double edged sword... If we get HE rounds..should work well vs aircraft..not so much vs steel hulled ships and GV's. Conversely, AP rounds would be great for ground attack work, but only "ok" for air to air as it just punches big holes:) Anyhow, just stating that I don't think the HE round is the one that is modeled. Static ships as follows; DD1\2 (Capital class in grdlabels) = 1500 damage pts Freighters (Cargo class in grdlabels) = 1000 damage pts Boats (Boat class in grndlabels) = 700 damage pts. Generally small MMG cause 1 damage pt, HMGs cause 2 damage pts, 20mm around 8 and the 37mm M4 around 30 pts. Either way its a lot of strafing so I would bring a bomb if you can. AI ships are similar to static ships but they have armour values that mean you have to have a weapon with enough velocity to penetrate. So you cannot strafe CVs nothing penetrates, DDs are next to impossible to strafe but if you get in close you may have a chance but they shoot back very well and FRs and Boats should be able to be strafed down with high velocity weapons like HMGs and Cannons. Hope that helps. |
