FRAME 1 - ALLIES

The North Sea 1939

Gentlemen,

Hitler has broken the Treaty of Versailles. He has promised his people revenge against the Allied powers,
and the expansion of German power and territory.
Shortly after Hitler came to power, he managed to seize control of Austria and part of Czechoslovakia
without any major combat operation.

Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, believed he could placate Adolf Hitler by appeasing him,
thus allowing the Nazi dictator to take a small bit of territory in Czechoslovakia without
provoking a war, and getting Hitler to promise that future territorial disputes would be resolved through non-violent means.
But just a few months later, Hitler broke his promise and seized all of Czechoslovakia.

On Sept 1, 1939 the Nazis invaded Poland.

As a result Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced that Britain is at war with Germany as of Sept 3, 1939.
We are now at war.

German authorities have ordered their Uboats to immediately take action against all British ships.

We are fully within our right to defend Great Britain from this nazi aggression.

It is imperative that we secure our shipping lanes in the Atlantic from the German Kreigsmarine.

Your orders:

Strike German Naval ships and Uboats docked in the port of Wilhelmshaven.
Set up an air defense for our Naval operations along the coasts.

Intel:

We also have it on good authority that several German Cruisers and Destroyers have made their way out of Wilhelmshaven
and are proceeding North toward the Heligoland Bight.
Keep a lookout for German Uboats* patrolling in the North Sea.
Any periscope or surfaced Uboat sightings will be reported to you as they come in.

Good luck Gents.

*any ship you see labeled 'boat' will be considered a surfaced submarine.

Note from the S3 janitors:
The historical scenario has been set. Now it is up to each side to decide how to allocate resources. You can choose all offense, all defense or a combination of the two, split into the numbers of your choosing. Good luck!

Gents. if we want to escort buffs there and back, you will need to do some throttle/fuel management.

Climb out at 75% throttle, climb speed 120 until you get to you intended alt (15k?). Then level and cruise at the lowest throttle setting you can get away with (35-40%?) and keep up with the buffs. remember you need fuel to rtb...dont get into a fight down low deep in enemy territory...you will not make it back

Historically, this raid did not have escort. Its failure made Britiain rethink its daytime bombing with no escort mentality.

I think we may be able to surprise the enemy if we manage our fuel effectively.

Any fighters defending the coast or searching for Uboats may want to conserve fuel as well but not as strict as the escort.

Thanks muzz.

Also, there are Uboats roaming the North Sea. (A ‘boat’ is a surfaced Uboat). If you spot one, report it’s location. Intel may provide their location as well during the frame.

What is RAF intel? Are our .303 cal MG's of the Hurricanes enough to bring down a submarine or are bombs needed?

I would say bombs, but a LOT of strafing might do the trick.
