The 4th launched B-24's out of F72 on Trobriand Island in the Solomon Sea. With low numbers, we were able to manage 2 escort P-38's that rolled from F 96 on Goodenough Island. Target, Field 7. Technical issues delayed 2 buffs and a disco a few minutes before our drop severely weakened our capabilities. What should have been an easy close, turned FUBAR. With little resistance at Rabaul, we took several passes on F7, however the lack of buffs and technical difficulties took away our chance of success. The 4th rtb'd and got several kills on NME fighters who were making a desperate attempt to bring down our heavily armed B-24's.
With little time remaining and F7 out of range, the 4th launched B-25's on a low level attack to F37. Unfortunately time ran out before we could close.
With F7 unguarded, we caught the Japanese with their pants down but technical difficulties and a disco along with a very long distance to target made success impossible.
New Guinea was a long and hard fought campaign. Salute to the 4th, the AE's, RCAF and thanks to the S3 Janitors for their hard work!
