S3 Series

4th FG launched with 12 pilots (6 Spits then 6 P-38Gs) to target F98. With GCI support, the Spits provided interdiction keeping the skies of F99 busy while 4th Lightning pilots hit F98 and immediately RTB back to F161. 95-98 and 103 were hit at different times with the Spits providing support and the38’s attacking via NOE. While results were effective bombing accuracy was minimal and late departures from attack areas by P-38 pilots resulted in more losses than necessary. A number of sorties were run on all listed enemy targets with at least seven 4th pilots remaining and approximately 16 enemy fighters shot down by the end of the frame. This was far better than previous frames in this series where we lost almost all of our pilots.
