Gentlemen,
The 352nd began at field 32 mid island to be able to go east or west to help in defending.
Immediately watchers stated that a substantial force was coming south to 73 from our old bases in the north.
Knowing we were on our own we attempted to engage with the ability to fight southerly and with speed in our B339 charges.
This was somewhat successful but the enemy was in many fighters and at all altitudes making things interesting.
The enemy also came within 2 miles of our home base making damaged aircraft home more difficult.

Sortie 2:
Many had to get up quickly to help others get home and beat off aggressive low fighters.
This was successful and we were able to reduce the enemy to a more 2/3 ratio at this time.
Home base 32 also became vulnerable as ground forces, unknown to us, had removed themselves from the area, thus
our base was going to be overrun no matter what our success may be.

Sorties 3 to 5+:
We began to be under fire at all times and base landing and takeoffs were hairy to say the least. The fanatical enemy seemed well assured
we were going to have to leave no matter what. Ordered a final refuel and rearm and move toward friendly areas in the F28 base.
As we flew west it was noted that the enemy had already rebased and began to move south.
We turned back east and attempted to engage the larger numbered enemy. They were from 28k down to 1k and we had to split up to engage them best.
They were unaware of our initial presence but superior numbers began to harm us. We took a few with us and 2 or 3 escaped to get west.
Some of our fighter pilots planes were so damaged that only swordfish were available on the coast so we attacked 19 with token forces and some damage.
Others able to keep fighters in the air attempted to stave off the hordes of Bettys coming at will.
