S3 Series

The Group took off from Belgium to assist a large buff group from England make it to their targets in Germany. Our first sortie was scheduled to be a very short one, as takeoff for sortie #2 had to occur at T=20 to meet the buff stream at the appointed location and altitude. We elected to begin fulfilling Series requirements of all pilots operating two different ac types over the course of the Series by operating (2) flights of P-51D aircraft and one flight of P-38L aircraft. The 38s had slightly shorter legs, and that flight operated closer to enemy lines initially than did the P-51D aircraft which were sent to escort the buffs. As the buffs moved into Germany all of our flights picked-up the buff stream and warded-off any attacking FW 190 aircraft that were encountered. All of our flights became engaged at one time or another, and the P-38 flight operated deep into Germany, and remained there until the "cease hostilities" call went out. Our flight leaders expected to see the FW 190 series of aircraft with a few Bf 109 models mixed into the wings. Both are enemy aircraft which we elected to treat with respect. We were remarkably successful against a very viable enemy opponent. Our P-38L flight had NO LOSSES and a significant number of victories. 50 cal. ammunition was much less effective than was "expected.
