<S> Gentlemen!

* All fighters were tested at 50% fuel.
* The P-47D-25 was tested at Max Ammo.
* For both Speed and Climb Rate tests, boost 1 was used (boost 2 "military" for the P-47D-25).
* For the Consistent Turn Rate test, best avaliable boost was used.
* The Consistent Turn Rate test was done at sea level.
* The fl2027 version was used in all tests (Same flightmodels as in the S3).

F4U-4
Speed: You can just about outrun the N1K1-J and the J2M. The Ki-84 however will catch you, except below 5000 ft or at 25 000 ft.
Climb: No, not against any IJN plane.
Turn: You can turn with the J2M2 and J2M3, but not the N1K1-J or the Ki-84.

------------------------------------------
F4U-1D
A poor man's F4U-4, which means it turns a little slower, runs a alittle slower and climbs a little slower. It has prettier camoflauge though when using the VMF112 USSBennington skin.

-----------------------------------------
P-51D
Speed: Yes, you can outrun all the IJN fighters. The J2M is faster above 32 000 ft though.
Climb: No, just no. Keep it level if you are running.
Turn: Nope, you can turn well for a short burst, but once you lose speed you are in trouble unless you extend. If at very low fuel you might turn with a J2M3, but not a J2M2.

-----------------------------------------
P-47D-25
Speed: Inferior below 25k. Above 25k you can outrun the N1K1-J and the Ki-84, but not the J2M's.
Climb: No. keep it level just as with the P-51D when fleeing.
Turn: Holy crap, no!!!

All the Japanese planes will come in above us. Seems the P-51D service ceiling is porked (should be 41 900 ft) , but nothing to do about it now since flightmodels are not allowed to be updated during an S3 series. This because of past violent protests, with accusations of bias, when FM's were fixed mid-series. Also be aware the IJN fighters can climb at around 1500 ft/min above 33 000 ft, so they'll be more agile and able to regain alt much quicker than we can at ~200 ft/min. Dunno if the P-47D or the F4U-4 is the best high alt escort?

SERVICE CEILING AT 75% FUEL
J2M3: 40 000 ft
F4U-4: 39 500 ft
N1K1-J: 38 200 ft
P-47D: 38 000 ft
Ki-84: 38 000 ft
P-51D: 37 000 ft
P-51D DT's: 35 200 ft

Edit: Seems like Dawger might be allowed to fix the service ceilings next week.

Update is now out. Dawger has fixed the Mustang service ceiling.

At ".speed 165", the P-51D can now reach 41 000+ ft at military throttle and 42 000+ ft if using WEP the last stint.

IMPORTANT!!!
Forgot to mention it earlier: Always use at minimum ".speed 165" when climbing in the Mustang, or it's climb performance will get hampered by the Air Ram effect.

Thanks Robert,
For my mental clarity,"Military Throttle" has been said to be Boost 1 (WEP1) and WEP is said to be WEP2 (Boost 2) (67"), is that correct?
Or, is Military in the P-51D 100% throttle? Which should be somewhere around 65%-75% "cruise"?

and...

Since the ".speed 165" avoids Air Ram Effect what angle is that? One assumes about 8º AOA? Or possibly just 8º nose up (one would think has to be angle off scoop not just angle)? Or, is the Air Ram Effect determined mathematically on speed and angle?

Just wanting to test and understand the reactions.

Thanks

You are correct that the military power is BST1 for the P-51D, sir. It will display in the HUD to the top left, or in the buffer when you select bst1. 100% throttle in game is pretty much cruise throttle. Probably like using 70-80% in the 2012 flightmodels. Military is not always Bst1 for all planes, the P-47D for example has Bst1 = continuous, Bst2 = Military, Bst3 = WEP.

I'm not an expert on air ram effects and angles etc, and I'm just learning about it myself. This effect was the reason why the P-51D required so much tweaking until it performed according to historical data, since I ran all climb tests at 155 mph while the programmers used 165 mph as a base. All I know is that your consistent climb rate takes a hit if your speed goes below ~165. So if you set ".speed 155" for example, it will take you somewhat longer time to reach top altitude compared to ".speed 165".

<S> sir and wtg last frame!
