Here is a quick outline of the overall series plan. Frame 1- Deny enemy use of bases covering the strait between the Huon Peninsula and New Britain. We were fairly successful in doing that by closing FInschafen (F62) and Arawe (F42). Only Cape Gloucester (F25) remains in close proximity. The enemy will have to base in the Nadzab-Lae area or at Cape Gloucester. Frame 2- Destroy enemy air forces and attack static shipping at Finschafen area (f60 and F61) and convoys traveling the Lae-Cape Gloucester route. It may be desirable to close Cape Gloucester but I like the fact that they will be tempted to base fighters at Cape Gloucester, effectively splitting their forces without effort on our part. Frame 3- Rabaul Raid Frame 4- A return to operations in the west against targets in the strait Frame 5- Rabaul Raid The Rabaul Raids need B24's so the Heavy Bombardment groups can plan second line aircraft only for Frames 2 and 4 Questions and Comments welcome. |
