Fuel Burn

100% throttle fuel burn is 194 gallons per hour

50% is 98 GPH

Military Power Fuel burn is 333 gph TIMES the throttle percentage. So if Military gives you 120% throttle your fuel burn is 400 gph or a full tank in 45 minutes.

The highest fuel burn is 400 GPH at 5000 feet in military power.

Military power gives you NO EXTRA power above 30000 feet but you DO BURN A LOT MORE FUEL. Stay out of military above 29,999 feet.

Military power provides limited gain above 25,000 feet, 5 % or less for a dramatic increase in fuel burn

To high speed egress (Military until off radar then 100% throttle) from Finschafen (F62) back to Horand (F80) at 10,000 feet requires 50 gallons of fuel.

At 10,000 feet:

Military Power 365 mph TAS 380 gallons per hour 1.04 gallons per mile
100% throttle 340 mph TAS 194 GPH 0.57 gallons per mile
75% 313 mph TAS 146 GPH 0.46 gallons per mile
50% 265 mph TAS 97 GPH 0.36 gallons per mile

As you can see, 1 gallon for every mile will get you home at Military power.

1 gallon for every 2 miles will get you home at 100 throttle.

All of our operations for the first sortie are no more than 100 miles from F80 area so fuel is of no concern until 100 gallons and is not tight until 50 gallons.

Second sortie operations in the Cape Gloucester will require adding 25 gallons maximum to the first sortie numbers.

These are 10,000 numbers. Higher altitude will yield higher TAS for the same fuel flows requiring less gas for the same distance.

Flying the P38G

Use the maneuver flap setting to turn at high speed. Be careful deploying it under G as you will go straight to blackout.

Roll rate is poor. Use rudder to augment roll rate.

Below 150 mph the G gets sloppy. Below 100 it becomes hard to control.

The autopilot will rock the wings if you are slow. When you click it off it may leave lots of aileron trim in. Shift G will clear trims to correct this.
