Salute! Kept wondering why takeoff was so dicey, and landings worse. Then I looked at speed again - duuuhhh ( too many senior moments lately). So looking up Essex class boats I got top speeds way up there, like 34 or 35 knots. However, I figure a typical launch speed might be 25 - 30 knots. To simplify, we could use 26 knots and have aboput 30 miles per hour over the deck, assuming no wind. As a matter of fact, I seem to remember that speed from years ago for the boats. Anyone else? 10 mph makes a differences when you are in a heavy, underpowered Tub, or even a loaded Hellcat. It helps stall margin and also reduces p-factor/roll effects at full power. Therefore, the plaintiff beseeches the court to increase boat speed to 30 miles per hour Gums whines.... |

Salute! Talked with my "nasal radiator" buddy that actually flew off of the Lexington ( the real one from WW2). Normal speed for lurch was 25 knots +/-. Then they had wind, which we have troubnle with in the sim. Secondly, he said you don't look at airspeed but simply pull up a bit as you go over the bow!!! Luv it. Gums sends... |

Thanks gums ~S~ So the current routine is off by 8mph or 8 knots no matter how you look at it Not been a huge deal in general. The sudden turn the CV makes has been a bigger problem. This is what I have been doing to get almost a 100% good takeoff. start engine with 0% throttle, wait for it to spin up and oil pressure to settle. gun it full throttle, + Boost 2 Keep the rudder centered as much as possible and go straight down the deck. IF you path is not as straight as you would like it throw in 15º flaps about mid deck. Very gentle pull back as you fall of the deck. PS: Don't forget to memorize the target pictures |

Salute!! OUCH!!! Quote: PS: Don't forget to memorize the target pictures No respect no more. None. Zip. Nyet. Nada. Noway dot com. Sheesh. For some reason, I can remember the target pics from years ago, but not this past week. Try this one Nofly, from December of 1972, and street names are a dead giveaway of the city: Left turning rollin from the east from 20K, release about 8K at 500 knots, and first 14 guys hit the warehouses and center tracks. I was in last flght and my element lead and I hit the "fork" with 2 x 2000 pounders apiece. Gums sends... |
