4th was assigned close escort with P-51B and launched from MAF 106 to meet the bomb group just east of the 2.6x. We were still climbing(about 25k) and had buffs in sight when we were bounced by 109s and 190s. The Pony B is heavy with fuel and drop tanks so we had to drop the tanks to fight. The enemy had advantage of height and speed and we were kept away from our charges. Bombr- was the only 4thman to reach and stay with the buffs the whole trip. with the group being heavily damaged, or dead, it was time to rtb for egress escort. Nookyb and vangrd made it back to 106 to re up for egress escort and met some opposition near City 40 and lost van....nookyb made it home with an assist on -prime. Sorry bomb guys, we didn't help much this time. |
