Structural failures were the tale of the day for some of our pilots as we undertook a bomber escort mission. The Buff planners had presented a longer-than-average mission to avoid radar detection prior to an attack on the enemy's central and western airfields. The attack by the buffs was successful, and both of their target fields were destroyed. The route chosen by the buffers took them right into the heart of injun country. While in transit between the first closed field and the attack on the second, enemy opposition became increasingly more numerous as their radar coverage took effect. Losses were numerous to the Group, however the predominance of the buffs returned to their bases. Subsequent sorties had Group flights all over the map seeking bad guys. Our remaining pilots did a great job of upholding Group tradition and were up until the final flag.
