The Group was tasked with a sweep of the Port Moresby area prior to the arrival of the buffs. From our launch, our flight leaders elected to take an East to West approach of Port Moresby. We saw action from our first arrival in the area. We were able to pick-up the buff group near F-76 and took them into the target area. The Ki-43 is an airplane with a rather short clip, and we had pilots shuttling back and forth to our F-80 base all evening when necessary. During the evening fights were at most all altitudes. Enemy AI C-47s seemed difficult to find, except for the ones stuck on hills somewhere. AI B-25s were faster than our aircraft and generally could not be caught to be engaged from any angle. Pilots chasing the AI B-25s reported cruise airspeeds of approx. 325 mph.
