Geheimdienstinformationen report, March 30 1945,
British Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery’s 21 Army Group estimated at 1.25 million men began crossing the Rhine River on the 23rd. British 6th and US 1th Airborne Divisions have landed East of the Rhine and have linked up with the British forces. Every Allied army now has troops on the east bank of the Rhine.
The Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front has started to attack across the Hron River and along the north bank of the Danube.
German commanders report a loss of confidence among their own men.
Danzig has been captured by the Red Army along with 10,000 German prisoners and 45 submarines in the harbor.
Commanders order retreating troops to blow bridges to slow the allied advance.
Hitler is furious at the allies' bombing of Berlin and has ordered all troops to defend Germany to the last man.
Reichmarschall Hermann Goering has been heard to say, “When I saw those mustangs over Berlin, I knew the war was lost.”
We can expect more strategic bombing from the allied air forces. It remains likely they will continue to target manufacturing factories and munitions dumps deep in the Fatherland.
