First off, let me say I appreciate all the help I got from representatives and COs from the AEs (Besea and Cromm), the Night Stalkers (Coolon), the Nomads (Gums), the TKs (Sakai) and the 4th (Bombr), who without their desire to get the job done exceeded my expectations. I had a little trouble with the Frame AC tracks and recognize other areas I can improve. The old rule KISS applies here. I will look at the results of each group.
OBJECTIVES: CLOSE PRIMARY F33, 37 AND HOLD F1 CLOSE SECONDARY F74, 43
The Primary Objective was accomplished after the AXIS BOMBER FORCE here-to-fore designated by the acronym ABF hit them with two Sorties leaving the Alternate only slightly damaged sinking a couple of ships and doing minor ground damage and the 4th providing good coverage of F1 its DAR and preventing their loss to the Allied attacks.
SORTIE 1:
American Eagles did a fine job linking up with and supporting manned ABFs at F32 providing excellent protection. Besea and others took out several e/a fighters during the sortie. The fact that unmanned ABFs went in low without protection may have contributed to thinning out Allied defense but also made it easier for them to garner easy points. Regardless, the AEs provided protection from their intercept point with the ABFs to the Primary and then RTB back to their bases, with only one kill and two lost, setting up the AXIS forces to attack either the Primary for a second sortie or the Alternate for an initial attack. RESULTS: Kills: Besea 1 Losses 2: Swanee, -Lehi-
4th Fighter Group did a very good job defending F1, its DAR and the area within a 20-30 mile radius of F1. It was difficult landing in the area of F1 due to the topography and the way Dover was setup not having a defined runway but no friendlies were lost due to landings. Out of 12 109-4Aas that took off only 4 remained during the time of the second sortie. Jedi and a couple of others got kills and will check scores when they are produced. Several Sorties were flown by the 4th during both sorties by the AEs and ABFs. The attacks on F33,37 may have thinned out Allied Forces over F1 and only 1 Allied Bomber attach took place with them loosing several bombers and causing little damage. RESULTS: KILLS: ~ 4 Kills Losses: 8
ABF numbers were light on the first sortie. AEs were flexible intercepting the ABFs NE of F32. Near F32 2 destroyers were observed and the ABF had to turn avoiding HEAVY AA. As the ABF climbed for altitude they headed for the IP F34 with the AEs providing support. AI bomber flight was loaded and hit the Primary ahead of the ABFs with good timing although damage was lite.
Several e/a were picked up east of the IP and had a lot of action as they turned toward the Primary without sticking around over F33 they continued on to F37 hitting that Primary and then RTB and getting a little strung out. Damage was lite over F37. Again AEs had good support but things were troublesome due to ABF pilots lagging behind. RESULTS: Losses: 1 Bomber 1 Bomber Disco
ABF AIs contributed to the overall action hitting the Primary ahead of the initial strike by the manned ABFs. This may have contributed to the lighter attacks and causing the Allied Forces to dive on the AIs and then having to climb back to the manned ABFs, this also may have contributed to the light attacks on F1. RESULTS: INCONCLUSIVE
SORTIE 2:
AMERICAN EAGLES provided similar support as in sortie one getting two more kills with the loss of two pilots. It was noted, why there were so many Hurries intercepted since they were designated as bombers/strike AC. The question comes up if they take-off with bombs then drop them they are no longer bombers but fighters. While the AEs were providing support this allowed the manned ABFs to hit their Primary Targets again with much better outcome. Escorting the ABFs returning home and hitting shipping at F74 the AEs stood down after RTB. Kills 2: foss-j and Docgxx Losses 2: Okdoc and Hookls (overspeed)
4th pilots continued to cover F1 and surrounding territory intercepting an Allied Bomber force and several Spits and beating off several attacks by diving out with no losses during their last sortie and RTB to F9. RESULTS: NO LOSSES and KEEPING F1 in AXIS Control
ABFs decided to hit the Primary Targets again instead of focusing on the Secondary. ABFs and AEs linked up and intercepted AI bombers inbound to Primary targets. Once they reached their IP they again turned toward their Primary Targets hitting both F33,37 accurately smashing and closing both Primaries. Continuing on the ABFs turned E and hit F74 and sinking shipping on the way home to RTB.
SORTIE 3
Coolon, Gums and Gundoc decided to launch for a third sortid and look for GV. While doing so they were intercepted by a group of Spits with Gums and Gundoc being shotdown and Coolon barely escaping. After this Coolon intercept shipping NE of F32 and while sinking 2 ships was attacked and although he escaped his elevator damaged considerably. While trying to make an ER landing at his home field he pranged losing his AC and Life. RESULTS: Sunk 2 destroyers Losses: Gums, Gundoc, Coolon
SUMMARY:
There was trouble with flights routes which were overridden by all AC running routes to their credit. Most all the action in this Frame was done very well with F1 being held and the Primary Targets being closed and numerous ships sunk. One can never second guess anyone’s actions, all we can do is learn and try to correct problems noticed from them. The best answer to the third sortie is don’t go pull the tail of the Dragon if you don’t have to, it may lead to 6 points for the Allies. I am glad to have worked with all the CO’s that provided information and have learned a lot of how not to do things. Kudos to all groups for accomplishing our Primary Objectives.
