Post subject: | Frame 2 Night Stalkers & Nomads shipping strike |
we were able to scrounge up 3 nomads and 2 stalkers for this one. Gums, Gundoc, Goflyj, Mtdew & myself loaded up torpedoes and took the long trek to the south eastern end of the reported shipping area. a loose formation and a radar evading 500ft altitude was the plan. Contact reports from submarines let us know that there was at least one convoy headed out of Malta so we pressed on trying to wait for the brits to get lower in fuel or distracted with something else. Mtdew and Gums looked further south as Goflyj and I headed up the shipping lanes, this led to us being somewhat spread out when we eventually came across the ships. Two columns of ships were spotted and I circled them to wait for the rest of the strike to assemble there. Somehow around this time I lost track of Goflyj and am not sure what happened to him. I dove in and lined up for a torpedo run. The AA was intense and I fired from further out than I probably should have. Results were misses with my torpedoes. Gums, Dew & Gundoc came in and took down at least one freighter. We all made our own way back to re-arm. Approval was given for us to rebase at 205 cutting down our travel time. We returned to target piecemeal, this time both Mtdew & I took bombs. We again flew a long way south to find the remaining convoy. Much better results were made by our bombs. Gundoc mtdew & I were able to sink the rest of the convoy before gums came in and found no targets left. We all made it back to base and ended the evening. Totals removed (1) entire convoy: 4 Freighters sunk 4 Destroyers sunk believe there were no losses in our flights. Our ability to strike unmolested was paid for in DR blood, as they bore the brunt of the Brit fighter force. big Salute to the DR for taking on a difficult assignment. Also, the Stuka shipping strike in the west drew their attention also, especially later in the frame when we were unmolested making our bomb drops. Stukas sank a lot of ships too, I look forward to reading their AAR. |
