JG23 was riding above and just behind the bombers when contact was made with numerous Spitfires. Was very suprising to say the least that they were above our 26-27k (estimated 28-30k). In engaging we managed to get them away from the strike, but they were stripped of escorts and the numbers started going against us. I'd estimate they hit us with at least 2 squads. In hindsight, we should have got rid of the droptank when we RV'd and pushed for 30k. 20/20 hindsight

If I may be so bold as this has become the norm...........
We should not think of anything as capable of deception in any way. We should treat all of our movements at all times as if we have a spy in flight feeding direct information to the enemy in real time with exact information.
To take advantage of this, we need to have patience, and probably boredom for buffs, become the norm. Suggestions would be: 1. Have a complete bomb group plan and execution that, at first sight on (our) dar , of confirmed bandits .....reverses immediately, at that time all ALL fighters converge on the point of the reverse and then chases the fleeing enemy (because they will have already been told of the buff reversal, position, angle, alt and speed, quantity, types and groups involved) down and back to their ack and inside their dar.At that point we re-reverse the buffs as long as a minimum of fighters designated are still available . If not enough fighters we reset north and re launch fighters and go again with same. 2. Initial sortie has NO buffs and 1/2 jabo fighters and 1/2 escort of jabos. This again will be reported (because they will have already been told of the buff position, angle, alt and speed, quantity, types and groups involved) without fault and completely by the spy and thus no opposition will come of any consequence. the jabos will drop from safe alts and hit a very small amount of targets as massive losses would result from low level attacks. As the jabos leave for home those with enough fuel stay on station and the buffs show themselves just feet wet south, again this will be well known because of the massive amount of information the spy will supply. Do a Reverse when the enemy feels good and at that time the Jabos that need will be rearmed and back to cover the buffs again rather late in the frame. 3. WE ALL take bombers. Ju88s, we go as high as is possible and as fast as possible. This again will be well known (because they will have already been told of the buff position, angle, alt and speed, quantity, types and groups involved) by the enemy before we ever get on dar. Formations will be SUPER tight and we carpet bomb malta then at very high speed we exit the area. After that first attack we will then NOE attack all targets NOT at Malta. 4. WE ALL take fighters. Whatever has the largest bomb capability. We go as high as possible and fast as possible (reason high and fast is the spy will just say where any NOE attack is at in full with details). Attack Malta over and over without engaging fighters at all. High speed in, high speed out, again and again. We will loose approximately 1/3 of our total number to wing separations etc first sortie.
I am not a believer in excuses. Everything is an opportunity. Everything is overcome-able.
If someone makes it impossible to have a plan (because they will have already been told of the buff position, angle, alt and speed, quantity, types and groups involved) then have NO PLAN. Embrace that you are no longer able to be deceptive or secret or unknown. Use the fact that your enemy rightfully believes that they know EVERYTHING they need to stage, gain, direct and attack with full confidence that their enemy (us) knows not 1/10th your information. This is what you then use against ALL of the enemy, the spy will not know what exactly to see or say......... Be high, low, left, right, coming, going, at all times. Create confusion constantly until we are able to then pull the secret trigger of TIMING. Timing is all we have to use now. The CO at the point he understands the likelihood of best confusion, says GO! then everyone no matter the circumstance ATTACKS malta at that time.
Freeking come from every direction at all alts with all types of aircraft AT ONCE, in a circle. They will have to actually make a decision and not have it spoon fed to them. The ones they pick will be decimated. Everyone else will have a field day.
Losses will be high, confusion will be high, the spy will be useless because it will make no sense at all times. UNTIL the CO Says so. Any communication on orders or any other important type of comms should be outside the buffer from now on. Say nothing show nothing.
No matter how well you plan it will be fully revealed at all times in detail, so, have almost no plan and no details until the MOMENT.
