BIG will sortie at T + 15

475FG will climb to loiter in 20 mile northwest racetrack anchored on the 300 degree 160 mile fix

100/AE will climb to loiter in a 20 mile northwest racetrack anchored on the 290 degree 200 mile fix

All positions are and will be referenced off Berlin bullseye.

Once loitering minimum throttle should be used.

Burn internal to 60 gallons before burning external fuel.

Subsequent rebasing is at discretion of on scene leadership.

All interceptors should navigate to a position 10 in front of bombers before initiating attack run. Navigation must account for bomber speed of advance of approximately 6 miles per minute.

Example: bomber position is 300 for 200 miles. Your position is 300 for 100 miles.

The bombers cover 5-6 miles per minute and your fighters are climbing so you are covering 4 per minute. The combined speed of advance is 10 miles per minute. In 9 minutes you will be in attack position. This is an easy example but using 10 miles a minute and guesstimating using the bullseye map I provided will help interceptors determine a point in space to fly toward for proper intercept.

A large number of dedicated Axis fliers use plane specific measurements.

60 gallons = 227 litres.

60:1 rule

For every 1 degree at 60 miles = 1 mile.

So bombers at 270 radial for 180 miles and fighters at the 250 radial at 180 miles are 60 miles apart.
180 miles divided by 60 =3 miles per degree.
20 degrees x 3=60

Good news is you can get a rough wag just by looking at the screen and where it shows YOU at and then where you want to go.

Remember for intercept you need to lead the point based on your speed vs tgt speed....

In this case if bombers are doing 240GS and you're doing 360GS, you can do some quick math.

I' m doing 6 miles a minute, so 10 minutes to go 60 miles. Bombers are doing 4 miles a minute, so in 10 minutes they will cover 40 miles. So my intercept point should be based on a point 10 miles ahead of the bomber stream, so I head for a point 50 miles in front of the bombers....40+10. Or the 270R for 130 miles....you can do the easy way..lay a straight edge up there connecting the two points and then lay that straight edge on a radial and look at distance, or start doing mor e complex math in your nugget.

So the heading would be roughly 020 for about 70 miles....oops I'm only doing 6 miles a minute, so that is almost 12 minutes, which will put me only 2 miles ahead of the bombers.. <best GPS voice> "Recalculating"!

LOL...head hurt yet? Good GCI would be invaluable:)

Bomber intercept is not easy...oh yeah, and there will be guys trying to stop us from doing our job:)

OK - yes, my head hurts.

Would you post one more example but having dissimilar distances from Berlin? I understand the above example but one more that uses different numbers would be helpful.

It's great that you guys are real life pilots and math geniuses but reinventing the wheel for non pilots at this stage is a mistake. All I need is the standard 4 digit grid position and altitude please. Let me handle the rest.

Bombers reported at 290R-210 miles

You are at the 300R for 200 miles.

Quick 60 to 1 for distance: 210 miles = 3.5 miles per degree. 10 degrees =35 miles.

Quick plot point to point= roughly 220 degrees for 35 miles. Question is which way are they going? So you need a track to plot a true intercept.

If you cheat towards their target (Berlin), then you can see if I need to head a minimum of 180 degrees..but more like 160 degrees to intercept ahead of them.

But like Cromm says....as long as you have perfect GPS moving map...you just need the coords....add in Fighter Data Link (in flight Dar) and we are better prepared then today's Air Force for the wars we fight today.

This game is like being a new boss in a job...you can always make it easier, but you can never make it harder..
