So having gone into the WWII arena and tried to kill the buffs from a frontal aspect, I'd like to share some general observations.

Cannon conv set 900.

No icon range in WWII arena...so you need to know how big the plane is in your gunsight so you know A) when to open fire and B) when to come off attack to avoid collisiions.

If you can get slightly above or slightly below to give yourself some planform it helps to judge distance better. I open fire at roughly d10, and try to cease fire/come off attack by D5 due to closure rate. Realize if you start at the beginning of the stream you will have multiple attack options as you streak through the stream.

Aim for the cockpit...I wasn't able to drop a bomber from frontal attack with the A8 unless I PK'd it. I was able to kill engines though and create fuel leaks. One pass through the a 4 or 5 box bomber stream resulted in usually 2 kills.

As a squadron, you need to have a predetermined course of action post attack to 1) regain mutual support, and 2) get away from any escort coming down, and 3) set back up for a possible attack on the same stream...fuel and ammo permitting.

Some things discussed was having wingman come in D15ish behind you and try to hit same buffs to maximize damage/get a kill. That way they should be able to keep an idea of where flight lead is and be able to support or be supported if jumped.

We are outnumbered....but 25 of the allied are in buffs...so we should hold an edge in numbers fighter to fighters. We have DAR..they don't...we have fields to land on...they Don't. If we force escorts to engage early...they may not have fuel (if they jett drop tanks) to escort all the way in. Something to consider...

hi dobs,

This is one of my personal favorite scenarios and am very much looking forward to it too.

I just want to point out a certain 2 or 3 well known allied pilots would set up right in front of the buffs and shoot us in the face about d15 in front of the buffs, like literally as I was about to open fire i got one in the brain. 2 other subsequent HO attempts were thwarted this way. It wont change our tactics much but just be aware is all i am saying.

Its is smart to focus on the outer most buffs in the BOX and wound them enough to cause them to break form. We can gang up on them later once the escort is more disorganized.

Once the B24s are bombs out they can climb and go so fast almost impossible to catch them.

Expect the enemy escort to CAP our fields if and when they get chased off the buffs.

Agree Timos....that is why it is important to time our fighter sweep to occur just prior to us hitting the stream.

Create confusion, have the fighters looking high for those damn 109s, and then screams as the 190s come zipping through the formation.

Realize, we outnumber them fighter to fighter....and we can land and take off ANY airfield after initial roll (home field advantage).

DAR is going to be vital for us..... Having a dedicated GCI is going to be key to success.

A little int from Jabo.

"Remember the AI B17s will not be flying at 30,000ft. They will come in around 22-26,000ft and have staggered alts like a real USAAF box. So A8s will be needed to make a hard firing pass and get out of dodge. Please check out the B17 hardness in dawgers setup in the WW2 arena. There damage files have been updated and otto should be checked as those are set in the mbls." ;)
