Exactly.

After the initial merge and dispersion of the close escort, few of the Republics reformed on the bombers north and trail. With two friends in my high six, I was able to pull into Caruso without him even knowing I was there until he was raked and exploded. It was a five or more minute closure to d3. I even saw his wings do a 30deg left and right 'look'.

How high were the escorts? Were the jugs or stangs higher?

How did the 109G6 do at alt vs them?

Generally speaking from the last engagement:

P-47s en masse around 11km on the "perch" with a small element as advanced "HO blockers/scouts". 47s were utilized more as the shooters free to roam and engage around the buff box. A couple of ours were able to be jumped due to flying lower than the escort height or insufficient recognition of how much smash the Thunderbolt accrued. In a co alt engagement up high the advantage is even except if you are able to force hard maneuvering or force them to turn a tight circle to get a shot. Their E bleeds off and they are unable to recover quickly. 109s also bleed E in tight turns, however its acceleration seems to do it favors by recovering quicker on level or climbs from level. Force them to make the hard turns instead of you and maintain a hard deck at highest known alt of escort and the 109 should get the upper hand. Not exactly quick kills but gets the mission done.

On the deck 1v1 the 109 owns the 47 in slow flight. Most likely owing once again to its weight and acceleration. Very slow is bad, but if you keep the speed in what we call "the pocket" the G-6 responds well. I am not an expert on the flight envelope but maneuvering speed is somewhere around 250-300kph in game. Overwhelming numbers at critical mass hurt us more than machine capability.

P-51s were close escort never more than a km from buff group. I do not think any of us encountered 51s in the initial fight and they didn't chase to the deck. The ones Mcpot and I shot down were extremely low so we got the jump on them before they knew we were there. No 1v1 assessment at altitude but if the B flies anything like the D up hi they may be trouble if allowed to freely engage. On the deck is generally never good with those things.
