Post subject:  Sicily Terrain Scale

Originally the Greece Terrain was at 1:1 scale but at 406 miles it was considered too big for the players we have now. So we sized it down to 256 miles. We have the same dilemma for Sicily, its sized at 1:1 scale now at 310 miles but should we scale it down to 256 miles to keep the distances between Sicily and Malta\Tunisia smaller? Generally we hear criticism of the larger terrains and long flight times once they go over 256 miles. So would like some feedback on this before placing locations down. Once you do that you cant easily change the terrain scale and are locked in.

Very rough initial placement PDF showing the scale at 310 miles.

J,
First question would be "What is the terrain for?"
If for pre-Invasion of Sicily play, then a compressed terrain could work (I'd include some more sea space to the east), but it would make the targets on Malta pretty much cheek by jowl. Flight time from Sicily to Malta might also be ridiculously short. If intent is Battle of Sicily, then 1:1 makes sense as there would need to be some maneuver room over the Island. If the terrain were compressed the S3 battle would seem more like an Ardennes brawl.

Think Invasion Sicily event for this one. The Malta Convoys and Tunisia may be better suited to an eastern Med terrain. What scale that would be is another question.
