S3 Series

Numbers were even for this frame. With their backs to the wall the Allies initially adopted a more defensive posture, staying close to the F2/F3 area. Once again the battle was one of attrition in the air, with the Axis fighters taking a heavy toll on the Allied defenders.
The Axis used their 109s primarily in an air-to-air role, with 190s slipping in for Jabo attacks before climbing up to engage Allied aircraft.
After an hour an a half of combat the Axis had only destroyed 4 of 14 AAA positions at F3, but the Allies were out of pilots.
Without opposition, the Axis were able to close and capture the airfield at F2 and then F3. From there they moved their attacks to the F84 airfield on the island of La Galite. This proved a bit tougher nut to crack with the Axis losing 3 aircraft to AAA. Locating all the AAA was difficult and as was done at F3 the Ju 52s elected to drop troops before the airfield was closed. AAA killed many of the troops, but gave away the AAA positions. Although sufficient troops reached the tower to destroy it this occurred before the field was closed. One otto manning an MG fought to the bitter end and was not silenced until after all paratroops had attacked the tower. As a result, the field was not captured and Otto was awarded a posthumous MoH.
