http://www.squadselectseries.com/events ... ummary.pdfThe Dieppe disaster was a lesson well learned by the Allies. As their landing craft tried to take off the few Canadians that could get to the boats the Luftwaffe hit hard again with their small but experienced bomber force. While only 13 ships were sunk during the evacuation this was still a serious loss of life with many of the wounded onboard succumbing to the cold Channel waters. The Allied air cover was again successful shooting down 43 Germans for the loss of 27. 26 Dornier bombers were caught over Dieppe and shot down, after the battle this Kampfgeschwader had to be sent back to Germany to refit. Where the Allies would lack was in their medium bomber support. Low cloud over central England and many new crews meant that very little was attacked in France to help cover their seaborne evacuation. Several small targets across the Strait of Dover were attacked but helped little in supporting the Dieppe raid.
The Luftwaffe would win the final frame 192 to 111 and take the series winning 4 of 5 frames. The difference was the large advantage in bombers the Luftwaffe had over the Allies and their experienced use of them in attacking the vulnerable fleet off Dieppe.
Salute!
