S3 Series

Was pretty ugly from our perspective-- nice job on cohesive effort.

-S's to the Allied (352n in particular), indeed. One of those nights where we know we are better than what we showed. Sometimes we die, but have put up a valiant effort in the process. Last night was not one of those. Regroup, sit in the corner, stew for a while, get up kick the cat, grumble, carry on. Hoping to do better next time around.

Al Capone ( aka Robert), our frame CO, dreamed this up, especially for our lites.

So the buffs brought a lotta beer and books to read while we held and held for well over an hour and then made a dash for the big Toyota factory. The other field was gravy. Plan was to run IJN outta planes and/or have them RTB when buffs showed up.

Basically carpet bombed two tgts and then RTB.

We took some losses, but the overall plan seemed to work.

Can we restructure the Pacific scenarios to give the Japanese side a better chance?
I don't think the N1K or the Ki84 were fubar.
They seem very competitive (I didn't get to fly them much).

absolutely no complaint on the aircraft mix. I think SITC was probably the very best matchup of aircraft I've experienced in the S3's... (but what do I know). I'm not aware of anyone on axis side that felt the Allied were supplied superior aircraft. It was a great match up, and the 475th would have been happy on either side of the mix. I didn't look at overall numbers for frame 5, but suspect that each side was relatively low numbers due to the holiday.

Nope, our demise was not due to the series airframes or any thing like that. Excellent job by you guys - straight up. Just really wish we (the 475th) had gotten our collective chit together to provide the fight that we feel we are capable of providing. -S's

As Frame 5 CO, Let it be known, first and foremost, that I am not 'calling out' Satan's Angels with what I post below.

While watching radar to pinpoint the location of Allied Carrier Groups, I lost track of where the 475th were positioned. I requested the 475 to RP at a location closer to the main-land, but they missed the transmission and I did not follow up. It wasn't until they were too far south that I asked for grid location. I saw on dar they were entering an airspace that contained many unidentified contacts and we had ZERO assets to send in support.

Our main focus for the frame was to destroy the B29s. I had no intention of sending the Knights or another squad to attack the Carriers. We planned to neutralize the allied fighter group assigned to CV CAP by avoiding contact with them and focus all forces on the Superforts. I positioned Lf6, KoN, AE/8 and RCAF close to shore for bomber intercept. Though I did expect the attack to come to Tokyo Bay which contained exponentially more targets than the bay in the west. When the bomber stream appeared at the 7.6x, I vectored Lf6 to the west bay, had KoN refuel and the AE/8 and RCAF moved over to the west.

While having the 475th in the west for bomber interdiction would have been icing on the cake, their autonomous engagement with the Allies over the CV area (due west of F175 and slightly SW of 145) forced the Allies to remain on station over their CV. Again, reducing the total number of fighters we had to deal with escorting the bombers. Its not a 'Sakai Frame' unless at least one squad is decimated. I hated that it happened, but I believe their death was not in vain. We managed to down at least thirteen (13) B-29s. That is a good night's work.

Now regarding the plane matchups. We were out-classed plane wise. But guess what...that is historically accurate. I hate it, but it is my destiny - I fly Axis. And I would not have it any other way.

I am of the "mind" to take a look.

Not sure how many pilots sortied but when we merged it looked like at least two chit loads of bombers.

We had went south to pick up our brave scout, and were heading back North when we had the two groups called on Radar.

We had friendlies over the top of us Wagga and one more that I saw, made a bad assumption we had more with us.

Confusion on my part that one of the groups was the CV group... Maybe in the future we can Label groups....helps others SA. "CV group 180/65, New Group to west 200/115." Just a thought....
