This year in the S3 we are doing a lot of work to try and enhance the S3 experience. People are spending a ton of time fixing air frame FM's, making new maps and setting up events that will help to add to the realism and the Sunday night experience.

I truly appreciate the hard work of Dawger, Dobs, Jabo and everyone else that has the power to affect the S3 events and experience. Last night I had a lot of fun with the new arena (even the no GPS).With all the effort spent on everything else, I think some of the basics are being overlooked (or maybe can't be modified by anyone).

Something has to be done with the boat bubble. Last night I collided with a freighter and I was no where near a mast. I know one or two others also fell to the same fate. For me in the S3, ship hunting is my absolute #1 thing I like to do, period. nothing else gets me going the same way.

Can nothing be done about the bubble? If it's the mast hit box causing the issue, can't they just be removed?

I know this comes up every series we have boats but I would REALLY appreciate if someone could spend a little time (if they have some) to look into this. It is really frustrating to me, and to a lot of other strike guys, and would be greatly appreciated if we could finally fix this issue.

Respectfully,

MuskyZ

The 352nd lost 2 pilots to colliding with boats when they looked clear. I've noticed this problem is mainly evident with moving ships. I suspect there is a slight lag issue where the boat seems to be clear on your FE, but the server sees you colliding with the boat.

I just looked at the freighter hit boxes. They only come up about halfway up the masts on the artwork so I don't think hitboxes are the issue

I think dobs posted a video at one point that showed how much ships shifted side to side as they moved.
As I recall it was a lot. You have to give them at least twice the distance you think is proper in order to avoid colliding with them. At least two boat lengths is what I go with.
You're not hitting a mast (I think) you're hitting the ship itself. Do you have gun cam footage?
Best guess is to reduce the hit box widths?

No, I don't have any footage, I can never remember how to turn on the ACAM.

I did not fly low enough to hit the boat, I was above the mast by at least a mast length when I "collided".

It was a freighter for me. I did not "see" any side-side movement in the boat, looked good to me. If it was moving side-side in the servers mind, then I suppose it would be possible I swiped it in ingress thinking I was pulling up early enough but wasn't, maybe. Also I fly Warbirds classic, if that helps.

Is it possible to just remove the mast hit box altogether from the freighter? then we will know what the issue is.

its strange it happens with the Freighter and not the DDs. It is possible to strafe these down in the S3s only but as can be seen it is hazardous. Stand off weapons like bombs and torps are probably safer. Boats on the other hand can be strafed down but seem hard to destroy with torps and bombs. May try a couple boats again as they hever seem to have had a hit bubble issue.

It is possible to select weapons for the boats and freighters but have not done so mainly because it is hard enough to sink them without a defense. The escorting DDs should be able to put up a heavy if inaccurate barrage over a convoy.
