Thinking of a partial No-GPS series where it is turned on every 15 mins or so. As well as grey dar so some bouncing is still possible by sweeps etc. We are pretty much only hardcores left here so thought it open for discussion. Generally these are simplier affairs to plan and implement so cranking up the difficulty may work.

Assuming ETO terrain.

I will overlay some compass roses and mileage scales on the DDS to aid the navigation.

If you make a small field on the south edge of the map Allied it will help with cross bearings for navigation and you can turn GPS off completely.

Excited about No GPS and grey radar dots.

PLEASE, don't turn it off, or change it to gray dots, or make doughnut holes or any of that other rather unpopular stuff.

The more time the pilot has to spend with his head IN the cockpit, checking this bearing against another, drawing lines on a chart, or any other activity that takes time from LOOKING for bad guys, the WORSE his SA is going to be. Turn it off in navigation school, leave it on in S3s!

Happy trails...

The most intense, heart stopping fun I've ever had was when there wasn't GPS in a scenario. Wasn't that during a Berlin trip European scenario as well?
I vote for at least limited GPS, lets make it more realistic for a change.

I think it was a cv battle where we had no gps and had to vor everything to determine our position. Faced with a long session of patrolling the ocean looking for enemy ships, it was a welcome excersise in navigation. Even had to find our own ships. Don't think I can enjoy grey radar dots. Spent to much time bouncing and maneuvering toward friendly dots. Now that I think about it, I really did NOT enjoy gray dots. We to few and terrain to big and its hard enough finding the right kind of fight even with good gci. They did have some kind of IFF in ww2 didn't they?

May be a bit much to try both!!
Perhaps stick with colour TWR dar so GCI can identify good from bad.

People will probably have enough to cope with if there is no in-flight GPS.
The HUD shows your grid position and you can also VOR.

I enjoyed the S3 much more with greydar. It meant you actually are rewarded for keeping track of who is who and who could be where by X time , etc. More possibilities to bounce and a better chance against the bigger squads. It sucks looking from tower and being able to say "OK there are 5 of you and only 1 bad guy, go get em"

No GPS? well that would be real fun to try. We could atleast try it for 1 frame?

Yeah, it was called a radio.

What we have is more like BLUFOR. Radar operatives could recognize large formations and to a degree type by silhouette, but it still required eyes on to know exactly what you are dealing with. Right now there is almost no point in calling "Merged" when you can track the enemy to the nearest foot. Radar types is not a pilot problem anyway as we do not have in flight dar.

To me GPS on/off don't matter to me, but we should consider this is still a game, not a job, that most have limited time to play. Can't really afford to get everyone lost for 3 hours. IMO GPS is not far different from a well trained pilot that we fancy ourselves to be and the time it should take triangulate position with the tools at hand vs GPS is a moot point.
