| Post subject: | ETO Navigation Maps Samples |
Here are a couple sample navigation maps for the ETO. One Allied with just London and Berlin range rings, the other is Axis with a few cities on the continent for .vor purposes. The compass roses and range rings are faded into the background quite a bit to keep the clutter down. I can bring them out more if they seem too faint. Navigation is quite simple with .vor available giving a bearing and distance to the station. Save as eto.dds in your Warbirds20XX folder. PS I noticed in doing this that the grid squares in ETO are actually 38 miles instead of the published 40 so if you notice a difference that is where it comes from. But its been many years since I read that. You could be correct. I only checked the X axis. I measured the range rings using 2048 pixel width of the dds divided by the X distance (406 miles) which works out to about 5 pixels per mile. The rings are based on that and seem pretty close although the 160 mile ring seems a little off when I checked with .vor |

Love these maps. One of the beauties of drawing things into the DDS instead of an overlay is that it shows up in the right proportion both in the tower and when in flight. Thanks for posting these ~S~ FWIW the reason you see slight errors vs. VOR data at distance is because the grids are not exactly 38 miles. They are 38.1 miles in size and that's the same for the X and Y axis. More precisely they are 201168 feet.. the entire size of the map is also not 406 miles but 406.34 miles or 2145500 feet. With angular data the further out you are the more the error is magnified. My numbers are also not accurate either, just around the 10x10 cross they are probably off by a 10th of a mile or so. |
