I wish I was filming last night, I had one of those "rare" S3 moments. I missed the initial strike, watching
my Badgers win in the NCAA tourney. Entered S3 arena with 2nd strike on Pearl well underway. Rolled my
zeke and caught up with the inbound buffs. Flew buff shotgun close escort to targets F5, F4 which closed.
Covering the buff's exit, we were jumped by P40's. I lost my 'vator and flaps in the fight, 45 minutes left in the frame.
Leaving the fight, the zeke did an uncontrolled climb to 16,000 ft. I found a throttle sweet spot of 23% allowing a
slow descent. I took the long way back to the CV very slowly losing alt with throttle management and only rudder to steer.
Once finally down to 2000 ft and near the CV's, I lined up on one and went for the gears up landing. Somehow, some way, I
skidded in safely on the CV, stopping 5 ft before falling off the front end. In my many years flying the S3, probably my most
memorable landing.
And I didn't have the camera running.......
