Basic Rules

Initial Format - subject to change before the first frame.

Start Times - each frame uses the following schedule;

  • T+0 - Luftwaffe may launch
  • T+10 - RAF may launch patrols
  • T+10+ - RAF are scrambled by CM call.
  • T+160 - Dusk, last surface attacks completed all a/c must disengage ASAP.
  • T+180 - Near dark, all squads must be in tower or on final.

Operational Restrictions - each side may only base at those airfields with steps on the map. Luftwaffe may only attack targets west of the Luftflotte 3 line on the map.

Frame Restrictions - each frame represents 3 hours during one day. Restrictions due to damage and time will affect both sides. Battle effects will influence fatigue and morale in subsequent frames.

Luftwaffe A/C Restrictions - each squad must fly each a/c type indicated in the A/C table at least once. F/B squads may have those pilots dedicated to the fighter role fly the 109E the entire series but the remaining bomber pilots must rotate through the remaining a/c types. Pilots may choose to fly either 109E type but cannot switch a/c types during a frame.

RAF A/C Restrictions - each squad must fly the Hurri I three frames and the Spit I M03 two frames.

RAF Patrols - the RAF may launch up to 6 steps of fighters at T+10 to patrol a specific target such as airfields or convoys. Once these steps land they must remain on the ground until ordered scrambled like the rest of the RAF squads.

RAF Scramble - the CM will order fields to readiness depending on the developing situation. Once the actual inbound strike is determined a scramble order will be issued for that specific field and those squads based their may roll. Squads can never launch without a scramble order from the CM. Squads must report they are in the tower and wait for the scramble order throughout the frame. This does not apply to individual pilots that disco or have to land due to damage/fuel. Individuals may replane but squads must wait in the tower as a unit.

Base Limits - steps limits for each airfield are indicated on the map. Pilots must fly from their assigned homebase only landing at other fields if damaged or out of fuel. Once airborne again they must join up with their squad.

Damage - damage to targets will carry over to the next frame with results based upon actual frame damage and ability of the RAF to repair. This will be represented by a weighted die roll. Each time a target is damaged during a frame it becomes more difficult to repair. Radar remains knocked out, airfields have reduced steps or are not operational at all. The RAF may be able to move steps between airfields and counter the damage inflicted but this too is limited.

Convoys - on the map the approximate initial start locations of shipping are indicated. Shipping will be varied and progress at a slower speed of 12 - 23 mph. Each frame they will be three hours farther along their route. Only that shipping west of the Luftflotte 3 line on the map may be attacked during a frame.

Luftwaffe Targets - Luftwaffe attacks will focus on radar, airfields, convoys and industry targets. Only these targets will score them points. Some targets will be ruled destroyed by LW HQ and cannot be hit again in subsequent frames. Such targets may or may not be actually destroyed for game purposes. LW intel was notoriously unreliable during this period.

Scoring - each side scores points for a/c shotdown and pilots KIA. The experten for both sides are worth more than those new to the game as recorded on the S6. The RAF score more for a/c shotdown than the Luftwaffe, especially bombers. The Luftwaffe scores points for destroyed buildings at the target sites as well as direct hits with bombs while ships sunk are worth points approximately 4 times destroyed buildings are.

Hidden Rules - each side will have some basic deployment rules and clarifications to the above rules.

Victory Conditions - Victory conditions are cumulative and a winner is declared only after all the frames have been run. The total mission points for both sides are compared after 5 frames.

  • 0-10 point difference is a draw
  • 11-30 point difference is a minor victory for the side with the greatest number.
  • 31+ is a major victory for the side with the greatest number.

S3 Clarifications - the S3 staff reserves the right to make a ruling on questions or game situations not answered completely or missed by the rules. For further clarification please post on the S3 forum or email Jabo.
