S3 #49 - Duel Over Kent - Britain July-August 1940

Luftwaffe Hidden Rules

  • dual purpose squads - dual purpose squads may fly some all or none of each type depending on the missions assigned and a/c steps allocated to them by the Frame CO.
  • airfield raids – attacks on airfields are important because they can destroy e/a on the ground and close them for operations both during and in subsequent frames. Depending on the damage and capability of the RAF to repair them some airfields will be closed until repaired in later frames.
  • ship raids – before a shipping raid can take-off recce flights will be needed to locate shipping in transit or at more distant ports. Shipping rounding the Dover strait will be spotted by ground observers as will shipping inside Dover port itself. Shipping will be near the routes indicated on the map. Only Stukas, Bf110C4 jabos and Do17s may attack shipping.
  • RDF raids - radar positions are difficult to destroy only Stukas, Bf110C4 jabos and Ju88A4s using dive bombing may attack these RDF sites.
  • Targets - only those targets specified in the Frame orders may be attacked. No radar plinking other than those specified in the spec ops or at legitimate target locations.
  • A/C steps - Luftwaffe will have some steps left over after assigning the maximum to all the available fields. This will form a reserve that subsequent Frame COs can use to position.
  • Ops Zones - there are three operational zones for the Luftwaffe. Bomber and strike squads based at airfields in one zone must conduct raids against that particular zone inside England. London can be attacked by both the eastern and central ops zone. Inbound fight paths by bomber and strike squads must stay within these zones but outbound flight paths may proceed outside them. Fighter a/c are free to fly in any ops zone. This does not include Bf110C4 jabos. Spec Ops missions do not have to follow op zone limitations.
  • Raid Limits - each Op zone may only have two raids conducted against it at one time. This means no more than two raids may be in the air at once. Spec Ops missions do not count toward this limit.
  • Base Changes - in Frame 1 no base changing is allowed because all fields will have the max number of a/c steps assigned to them. As steps are lost some base changes may be possible as openings occur at specific fields.
  • Air Starts - the Frame CO may request 20,000 airstarts at F85, F23 and F28. This is to represent the offmap forces marshalling and getting ready to head in for a raid.
Frame 1 - map

Points Scored = 4 pts losses + 8 pts missions + 1 pts spec ops = 13 points

Situation Report - we are going to destroy the RAF in the air. Strikes on their RDF sites, shipping and forward airfields will bring them up where our fighters may destroy them. To that purpose we will launch many raids on targets in Kent well within the range of our escorts and forward sweeps. An ambitious number of raids will be planned but the Frame CO has to decide which ones he can successfully accomplish.

Western Ops - intel has reported shipping at Brighton as well as two small coastal convoys. 3 ship raids will be conducted as well as a raid on the Beachy Head(R78) RDF site. If the enemy appears to be weak a strong raid on Redhill(F2) will be attempted.

Frame 2 - map

Points Scored = 6 pts losses + 5 pts missions + 2 pts spec ops = 13 points

Situation Report - our initial attacks were successful against British RDF and airfields. Intel suggests that both Beachy Head(R78) and Bawdsey(R62) RDFs are offline. For how long we are uncertain. Both Dover and the two airfields near it took heavy damage but no British a/c were caught on the ground. Intel believes both these and East Church(F19) and Detling(F34) are out of commission to the RAF. We will continue to punish the RAF on the ground by hitting their defending airfields. Shipping is a priority and any convoys found and attacked effectively. We took heavy stuka losses so these valuable assets must be protected. The RAF conducted repeated attacks on our invasion ports, sinking several ships and an attack on F8 resulted in several Do17s being damaged. These brave pilots took heavy losses and any further raids must be punished again.

Western Ops - intel has reported two small coastal convoys that must be hit, no British ship has yet been sunk and they continue to use the channel as if its their river. If the enemy appears to be weak a strong raid on Biggni Hill(F7) and Kenley(F10) will be attempted.

  • #1 - Western Channel Convoy - sink ships in this convoy hdg east
  • #2 - Eastern Channel Convoy - sink ship in this convoy hdg east
  • #3 - Biggin Hill(F7) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #4 - Kenley(F10) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.

Central Ops - intel has reported shipping off East Church(F19) heading to the Thames. Four important airfields will also be attacked during this phase and we are hopeful that RAF fighters will be destroyed on the ground.

  • #5 - North Channel Convoy - sink ships in this convoy hdg east off East Church(F19)
  • #6 - West Malling (F35) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.1 point
  • #7 - Rochester(F33) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.1 point
  • #8 - Rochford (F43) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.1 point
  • #9 - Manston(F32) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.1 point

Eastern Ops - intel has reported shipping at Ipswich(f48) as well as two large coastal convoy. 3 ship raids will be conducted to prevent these important supplies from reaching the factories of London.

  • #10 - Ipswich(F48) Port - hit only port and shipping at dock. 1 point
  • #11 - North Coastal Convoy - sink ships in this convoy hdg south off Bawdsey(R62)
  • #12 - North Coastal Convoy - sink ships in this convoy hdg south out of Martlesham(C49)

Special operations - up to three of these may be conducted during the frame.

  • Mine Laying - at least 3 bombers must take mines and drop them in the channel south off Southend(C74) to hinder the passage of British shipping 1 point
  • RDF - at least 3 Stukas, Ju88s or Bf110jabos must hit the Poling(R65) RDF station. 1 point
  • Petrol Storage - at least 3 a/c must hit the oil storage at Weybridge(C71).

Frame 3 - map

Points Scored = 6 pts losses + 7 pts missions + 1 pts spec ops = 14 points

Situation Report - our attackson the airfields to the east of London were largely successful with few bomber losses. Heavy damage was reported at all four airfields bombed but RAF repair crews seem to have put Rochester(F33) and Rochford(F43) back in service immediately. Our attacks to the south of London were intercepted and forced to abort the missions here. Ther RAF won themselves a morale boost on this one success. LW HQ wants to hit as many airfields as possible so these missed/repaired airfields are back on the target list. Mine-laying and the attack on Poling(R65) was accomplished with no losses. Ju88 reccon has reported a large number of RAF fighters sitting on 12 Group airfields. We must try and attack these fields with our long-range 109 escorts providing protection to our bombers. Convoys continue to get through unmolested and this is causing Goering to lose face infront of the Kriegsmarine. Goering will not have him made a fool of and shipping must be sunk. LW intel has reported lots of activity repairing RAF airfields and RDF sites but as yet we believe most of the airfields and radar targeted is still non-operational.

Western Ops - intel has reported two small coastal convoys that must be hit, no British ship has yet been sunk and they continue to use the channel as if its their river. No airfields in this area have yet to be bombed and the RAF turned back our forces last frame and this must be avenged.

  • #1 - Western Channel Convoy - sink ships in this convoy hdg east 1 point
  • #2 - Eastern Channel Convoy - sink ship in this convoy hdg east
  • #3 - Biggin Hill(F7) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground. 1 point
  • #4 - Kenley(F10) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground. 1 point
  • #5 - Redhill(F2) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground. 1 point

Central Ops - intel has reported shipping off East Church(F19) heading to the Thames. Two of the airfields attacked last frame were not closed for operations and must be attacked again. The important North Weald(F40) sector field will also be attacked during this phase.

  • #6 - North Channel Convoy - sink ships in this convoy hdg east off East Church(F19)
  • #7 - North Weald (F40) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.1 point
  • #8 - Rochester(F33) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.1 point
  • #9 - Rochford (F43) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.1 point

Eastern Ops - intel has reported that the RAF is positioning reserves at 12 Group airfields. These must be attacked to destroy their fighters on the ground. Northern convoys continue to sail unafraid down to the Thames from the NE.

  • #10 - Debden(F46) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #11 - Duxford(F45) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #12 - North Coastal Convoy - sink ships in this convoy hdg south out of Martlesham(C49)

Special operations - up to three of these may be conducted during the frame.

  • Oil Refinery - at least 3 bombers must bomb the oil refinery at Thameshaven(C73)1 point
  • RDF - at least 3 Stukas, Ju88s or Bf110jabos must hit the Canewdon(R63) RDF station.
  • Petrol Storage - at least 3 bombers must hit the oil storage at Weybridge(C71).

Frame 4 - map

Points Scored = 7 pts losses + 4 pts missions + 2 pts spec ops = 13 points

Situation Report - our attacks on the airfields south and east of London were largely successful with low bomber losses but the RAF managed to win the battle of morale twice forcing us into rapid retreats without our usual professional formations. Moderate damage was reported at all six airfields bombed but RAF repair crews seem to have put three back in service immediately. LW HQ wants to hit as many airfields as possible so these missed/repaired airfields are back on the target list. Ju88 reccon has reported a large number of RAF fighters sitting on 12 Group airfields. We must try and attack these fields with our long-range 109 escorts providing protection to our bombers. All effort must be made to reduce RAF airfields to rubble. LW intel has reported lots of activity repairing RAF airfields and RDF sites but as yet we believe most of the airfields and radar targeted is still non-operational.

Western Ops - two of the airfields attacked last frame were not closed for operations and must be attacked again. The important Northolt(F42) airfield north of London can be attacked as part of western or central ops.

  • #1 - Weybridge(C71) Factories - damage the two factories at Weybridge(C71).
  • #2 - Biggin Hill(F7) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #3 - Redhill(F2) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #4 - Northolt(F42) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.

Central Ops - one of the airfields attacked last frame was not closed for operations and must be attacked again. The important Hornchurch(F38) sector field will also be attacked during this phase. Hendon(F41) airfield north of London can be attacked as part of western or central ops.

  • #5 - Thameshaven(C73) - damage port and oil storage 1 point
  • #6 - North Weald (F40) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #7 - Hornchurch(F38) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground 1 point
  • #8 - Hendon (F41) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.

Eastern Ops - intel has reported that the RAF is positioning reserves at 12 Group airfields. These must be attacked to destroy their fighters on the ground.

  • #9 - Debden(F46) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground. 1 point
  • #10 - Duxford(F45) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #11 - Stradishall(F47) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground. 1 point

Special operations - up to three of these may be conducted during the frame.

  • Fighter Cmd HQ - at least 3 Stukas, Ju88s or Bf110jabos must hit the Fighter Command HQ(C77). 1 point
  • RDF - at least 3 Stukas, Ju88s or Bf110jabos must hit the Canewdon(R63) RDF station.
  • 11 Grp HQ - at least 3 Stukas, Ju88s or Bf110jabos must hit the 11 Grp HQ(C72). 1 point

Frame 5 - map

Points Scored = 6 pts losses + 7 pts missions + 3 pts spec ops = 16 points

Situation Report - our attacks on the airfields in the north were largely successful but due to losses of senior officers our formation lost direction far inside English airspace and took some time to return. The RAF concentrated on our well defended raid and left the undefended raid alone until it returned out over the Thames Estuary, that is when they hit them hard and inflicted some damage on the force before reception escort could arrive. Goering was furious and has ordered that all bomber units must have close escort. Our fast Ju88s travelled all over England and hit two important HQs escaping before being caught. Hitler has authorized several industrial and transport targets in Greater London. It is time to turn up the heat on the British people. LW intel has reported lots of activity repairing RAF airfields and RDF sites but as yet we believe most of the airfields and radar targeted is still non-operational.

Western Ops - none of these targets were attacked last frame. The important Northolt(F42) airfield north of London can be attacked as part of western or central ops.

  • #1 - Weybridge(C71) Factories - damage the two factories at Weybridge(C71). 1 point
  • #2 - Biggin Hill(F7) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground. 1 point
  • #3 - Redhill(F2) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground. 1 point
  • #4 - Northolt(F42) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground. 1 point

Central Ops - London is a target today, Hitler wants to turn the heat up on Churchill by hitting only industrial and transport targets in the Empire's capital. London oil storage and aircraft factories as well as Hendon(F41) airfield north of London can be attacked as part of western or central ops.

  • #5 - London(C15) - damage oil storage in eastern corner near Thames near bridge. 1 point
  • #6 - North Weald (F40) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #7 - Hendon (F41) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #8 - London(C15) - damage the many aircraft factories in the western corner of the city. 1 point

Eastern Ops - intel has reported that the RAF is positioning reserves at 12 Group airfields. These must be attacked to destroy their fighters on the ground.

  • #9 - Fowlmere(F44) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #10 - Duxford(F45) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground.
  • #11 - Ipswitch(F48) Airfield - damage this large airfield and destroy a/c on the ground. 1 point
